By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 28, 2007

Babe Ruth Baseball wrapped up for the 13-year-olds this week. Sturgeon Bay took on Bay Port in the state tournament and lost 11-8. The bats were hot for both teams and they each saw 4 runs cross the plate in the first inning. Bay Port would pull ahead in the second. Sturgeon Bay answered back in the fourth to take the lead but Bay Port bounced back at their at-bat to pull ahead by one run. Then in the fifth, Sturgeon Bay brought home another run to take the lead again but that was not enough. Bay Port answered back with 3 more runs for the win. In the offensive showdown, Sturgeon Bay tallied 15 hits and Bay Port had 19. Leading the way for Sturgeon Bay was Joey Fuerst with 3 hits. Josh Paul, Johnny Herlache, David Tauber and Joe Bittorf each had 2 hits a piece. Pitching for the team was Alex Bailey for 1 inning, Tanner Biwer for 3 2/3 and Josh Paul for 1 1/3. That'll do it for Sturgeon Bay as they have been eliminated from the tournament.

Door County Baseball League Report
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 27, 2007

News this week from the Door County Baseball League....  some additions were made to the All Star game played Thursday night at Institute.  Craig Gunnlaugson for the North and Jason Shimon, Kurt Ray  and Bob Tenor for the South.
Recap of last weeks action,  Sister Bay in upset over Egg Harbor 13 to 12.  Maplewood over Institute 6 to 3.  West Jacksonport in a big win 17 to 3 over Baileys Harbor and Kolberg shut out the Island 12 to 0.
Top hitters for the week and I believe this is a Door County League record,  the Jilot brothers. Dave and Steve each had five hits in the game.  Stuart Larson had three, as did Danny Hanson and Joel Delorit.  Two hits for Mickey Lee, Jason Shimon, and three for Adam Schubert including a big three run homer. Three for Steve Babcock, and two for Corey  Fuller and Lance Jennerjohn, who may just be your top defensive centerfielder in the league.  Made another outstanding catch in center Sunday to rob Jeff Sperber of a
double or triple.  Three hits for Matt Ash, and two Caleb Cornell, two for Greg Klaubauf, two for Jesse Miller as the same for Kurt Ray, Rob Ray, Adam Bretl and Mike Wery Jr. three for Bob Tenor. Two for Bob Fellner, Matt Bley and Woody Schartner, Cody Johnson with two, Alex Higgenbotham, Matt Higgenbotham and Paul Nelson.  Now for the

top five hitters in the league.  Greg Klaubauf at .429, Steve Jilot at .421, Matt Ash at .410, Ryan Tanch at .409 and Scott Price at .395.  Its anybody's race at this point for the batting title. For this week's action we have Institute going to Kolberg to take on the red hot Braves and young Kit Schartner will have his hands full in this one. Kolberg is tough at home and I will go with them to win this one.  Adam Bretl is one tough pitcher to hit .  Maplewood takes on west Jacksonport at the Ports diamond and they to do not lose many at home.  Ryan Tanck has taken over the mound duties for the Ports and Jason Shimon went the full nine Sunday against the cub team.  can he do it again or will Sperber be back on the mound.  Wickman gives me no clue who goes Sunday.  However, my clue tells me its the Ports to stay in the race for first. Also this week, Egg Harbor will be at Washington Island.  The Islanders two are tough at home as Baileys Harbor found out a couple weeks ago,  on the mainland its another story, but they  are not on foreign ground this week and Egg Harbor could still be reeling from the lost to Sister Bay.  Tyler Roehrig wants to be a Door County League pitcher and this is the week we will see if he is serious about it.  His team cannot afford a lost again, six to five the first game. I will go will the Harbor to win and stay in the playoff race.  Sister Bay at Baileys Harbor... what in the world happened to the A's the second half?  Bobby Schultz, former player and big fan, told me they were for real.  Bob, that was a funeral and I took your word  for it.  Now four straight losses and this is a big, big rivalry game to say the least.  Sister Bay has had some outstanding hitting days and the Harbor's pitching is in rough shape as they bought Jodie Viste out of a  five year retirement to help them out.  First game he was red hot, last game cold as a ice cube.  What will it be this week?  I will go with the Harbor to win and stay in the playoff hunt, a lost and its lights out for them.

Greisen Makes AFL All-Star Squad
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 26, 2007

Sturgeon Bay graduate and Arena Football League quarterback Chris Greisen was named to the All-Arena first team for an unforgettable season. This is Greisen's consolation prize to
a season ending one game short of a trip to the Arena Bowl. Greisen led the Force to a franchise-best 14-2 record and a Southern Division Championship while setting the AFL’s single-season touchdown mark (117). He completed 392 of 530 pass attempts (74.0 comp. pct) for 4,851 yards with 117 touchdowns and a passer rating of 132.0. Greisen set AFL single-season highs in passer rating (132.0) and completion percentage (74.0) in addition to the 117 touchdowns. He was named AFL Offensive Player of the Week on four occasions (Week 16, Week 9, Week 6 and Week 1), which is more than any other player in the AFL, and earned AFL Offensive Player of the Month honors for his performance in the month of March. Greisen finished the season ranked first in the AFL in touchdowns (117), passer
rating (132.0) and completion percentage (74.0). He also ranked second in passing yards (4,851), fourth in completions (392) and ninth in attempts (530).
You will never hear Greisen say he was shortchanged by not receiving the offensive player of the year award for the AFL but the truth of the matter is that Chris was statistically the MVP. Greisen played an amazing season and deserves a lot of the credit for taking a mediocre team in Georgia to new heights this season. Chris Greisen made all of Door County proud, during a season that will not soon be forgotten by Greisen fans and Georgia Force followers.

K/D Salmon Tournament Celebrates 25 Year Anniversary
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 24, 2007

The Door/Kewaunee Fishing Tournament reached the half way point today and Tammy Luedtke from Kewaunee has the biggest fish. The 22.47 pound salmon caught by the Kewaunee woman could be worth $5,000 and a trip to Cabo San Lucas.
The K/D Salmon tournament organizers joined me last night on the Sports Page on 104.1 FM WRLU. The program is held at the Ladder House in Sturgeon Bay every Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jerry MacMillen believes the tournament is so popular because of the money that is paid out. Often anglers finishing in 200th place receive a check in the mail for their efforts during the nine day event.
Kevin Naze also joined me and commented on the size of the salmon being caught. The number of fish is up but the size of fish is down, he said.
The skipper on the boat that won the tournament last year, Kevin Romden, also stopped by the Ladder House to talk about the event. Romden is fishing the event again this year and recommends anglers try different speeds, lures and water depths. Staying the same usually results in nominal results.
The tournament ends at 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Those interested in joining the K/D salmon tournament can buy a one day pass for $13. Tickets can be purchased at any of the five weigh in spots.
Hol'N One Mobil in Sturgeon Bay, Kap's Marina on Washington Island, Baileys Harbor Fast Stop, Billy Goats Bait and Tackle in Algoma and the Kewaunee Marina.

Legion Ball Still In Full Swing
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 22, 2007

Sturgeon Bay trounced Denmark 14-2 last night in American Legion baseball. Nathan Anschutz threw a no-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Bays. He did allowed two runs on a pair of walks and two errors but did not allow a single hit.
Michael Blizel flashed a hot bat again and finished with two singles, one double and four RBIs. Sturgeon Bay moves back above .500 at (15-14-1) overall and (9-7) in conference play.

Kewaunee County played tough ball yesterday as well. In a double header with Sheboygan, Kewaunee County won the first on the ten run rule and were shut out in the second game. 11-1 winners and 5-0 losers the non-conference matchup was interesting to say the least. Eric Anderson went 2x4 with five RBIs, and Ryan "the rockett" Adams went 2x3 with a two-run triple. Brandon Alexander was the winning pitcher and allowed just three hits.
