Today, participants will compete in the Door County Kids Triathlon at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA promoting physical fitness at a young age. The YMCA organized the kids into three division according to age. As the kids get older, the swimming, biking and running
components lengthen. Branch Director at the Northern Door Center Sally Pfeifer talks about tailoring a triathlon to kids.

Pfeifer says the event focuses on finishing the race as opposed to winning it. Each participant receives a t-shirt and medal for competing. Pfeifer explains how rewarding a triathlon can be.

Just getting the kids exercising is important for the YMCA. The Northern Door Center just celebrated its 8th Anniversary last week which means the YMCA Program Centers in Sturgeon Bay and Northern Door are extremely busy. Pfeifer says it's these events that show the positive influence the YMCA has on the Door County community.

Door County Baseball League All Star Teams Announced
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 20, 2007

The Door County Baseball League All Star teams were chosen Wednesday night by the managers and officers of the league. For the North squad we have Charlie Schell catching, Matt Ash at first base, second base is Chad Kodanko, Tom Anderson at short stop, Alex Higgenbottom on third base, Scott Price in centerfield, Jason Fuller in left, with Mike Jorgenson in right. Reserves are Len Atkins, Matt Bley, Paul Nelson and Brett Anschutz.
Pitchers are Mark Woerfel, Robi Schartner, Matt
Higgenbottom, Tyler Roehrig, and Justin Hartel. Managers will be Bob Niedzwiecki and Mark Stoeger.   For the South team its Mickey Lee catching, Jesse Miller at first, Ryan Tanch at second, with Travis Leroy at shortstop and Greg Klaubaugh at third. In the outfield will be Danny Hanson in left, Steve Jilot in center and Kyle Thayse in right. The reserves are Steve Wipperfurth, John Price, Ben Rikkola, Corey Fuller and Stuart Larsen. Throwing from the mound will be Jeff Sperber, Chris Wery, Kit Schartner and Adam Bretl. South managers are Dave Neinas and Ryan Tanck. Teams from the North are Egg Harbor,
Baileys Harbor, Sister Bay and Washington Island.  For the South its, Kolberg, Maplewood, Institute and West Jacksonport.  The game is at Institute on the July 26th. Game time will be 8 o'clock with

batting practice starting at 7:00PM. Cash door prizes will be given away during the game. John Becker will be doing the public announcing and scorekeeping. Delores Brown is in charge of the 50 -50 raffle. This is DCBL's only money maker of the year, so turn out
and watch you favorite player in the big all star game on July 26th at Institute.
The top hitters in the league right now are Greg Klabaugh at.459, Ryan Tanck second at .436 and then comes Steve Jilot at .429. There's a tie for fourth: Scott Price and Matt Ssh at .412.  For this week's games it's Sister Bay at Egg Harbor, and I say it will be Egg Harbor, as they make their move for the playoff. Maplewood at Institute and the Mets will be in big trouble if they lose this game.  The Cubs have been a a roll and could win this game but I will go with the Mets. Washington Island comes to Kolberg to face the 1st place Braves and it will not be pleasant and the Braves have won seven in a row and will make it eight.  Adam Bretl looks like he will be back on the  mound for the Braves.  Will Mark Worefel get the start for the Islanders?  The marquee game of the week is West Jacksonport at Baileys Harbor. Baileys Harbor, after a six and one start, is reeling with
three straight losses and West Jacksonport is only one game out of first at (7-3). Something has to give in this one.  Jodi Viste came out of a  five year retirement to pitch last week and did an outstanding job only  to lose a four hitter.  Ryan Tanch has taken over the pitching duties at the Ports and won two straight games, as last year's pitcher of the year Dave Jilot is in a slump, so to speak.  This is a coin flipper and I will go with the Ports to win a close one.

Third Annual Door County Triathlon

July 18, 2007

The 3rd Annual Door County Triathlon will take place this Sunday, July 22nd from Frank Murphy Park just south of Egg Harbor. At 8:00 a.m., the long course begins during which competitors must complete a one-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and a nearly a seven-mile
run. The grueling gauntlet will challenge competitors. During the final stage, runners will tackle tough elevation in Egg Harbor. Door County Triathlon Race Director Sean Ryan describes the unique demands of the competition.
(Audio Here)
During Ryan's tenure, the race has achieved tremendous success. In the inaugural competition, the Door County Triathlon received 500 entries. Now in the third year, the field has maxed-out at 1,000 participants. Ryan has also started a waiting list with 50 other entries who would like to compete. With all the success and traffic generated, the event requires incredible volunteer efforts. In fact, the Door County YMCA is still searching for volunteers on Sunday. Door County YMCA Financial Development Director Cindy Weber talks about some volunteer responsibilities.
(Audio Here)
You can sign up to volunteer at the two Door County YMCA locations. From triathlon experience, Ryan says finishing the race is an extremely rewarding experience. He cites Door County as a unique venue for this special athletic competition, and knows participants typically make a vacation out of the Door County Triathlon.

Tuesday Night Legion Recap
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 18, 2007

The Northern Door County American Legion Baseball team gave up an RBI single in the sixth inning that would prove to be enough for the Green Bay Shockers who came out with a 10-9 win. Marshall Larsen had two hits to lead Northern Door. He led the way back from an 8-0 second inning hole. The Shockers are now 11-10 overall.

Sturgeon Bay Legion lost to DePere 13-10 in a game filled with errors, base running mistakes and mental miscues. DePere jumped out to a big lead early but Sturgeon Bay clawed their way back into the contest late. A pickoff move by DePere pitcher and son of Luxemburg-Casco coach Terry Jorgenson proved to be the play of the game in the seventh inning. The run would have scored later in the inning and made it even tighter.
Mike Blizel went 3x3 with three runs scored, Ryan Zak was 3x4 with four RBI's and a three-run homerun and Sean Busse added a 3x5 performance. Clayton Hanson and Patrick Larsen each had two hits.
John Parent came in late and worked three good innings on the mound for Sturgeon Bay, allowing two runs. The Bays drop to (6-7) in conference play and (12-14-1) overall.

Schanhofer Believes In Clippers Hoops
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 17, 2007

Last night on the Sports Page on 104.1 FM WRLU, Mike Schanhofer joined me to talk about the future of the Sturgeon Bay girl’s basketball program. Schanhofer accepted the job early this summer after winning three state championships with Luxemburg-Casco. In 1988, 1994 and 2004 the Spartans brought home the gold ball from Madison.
Coach Schanhofer said he was at L-C for seven years before his team won a state championship, so if the same holds true for the Clippers, a state title will be headed for Sturgeon Bay in 2014. The coach joked that if he doesn’t win a state crown by that time, he does not deserve the job.
Coaching the Clippers will be a more difficult task this season after a strong 2007 class graduated. Schanhofer said that while his team may be young, they will play hard and compete as a team.
Coach also talked about the book he wrote in 2006. The book was published one year ago and has already sold out. A second publishing is possible but not in the works at this time.
Schanhofer was joined by Sturgeon Bay summer coach Tim Fameree on the Sports Page. The summer team recently finished their off-season league at Kewaunee. Fameree has coached with Schanhofer since his days with L-C.
The Sports Page is broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU, Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

Sunday morning, The Door County squad topped Denmark 8-1 and Green Bay West 7-2. The championship game was held Sunday afternoon and Pulaski was undefeated for the tourney. The Mavericks played stellar ball and earned a 4-0 win. Coach Neuman talked about the Door County Mavericks.
(Audio Here)
Courtney Wautier was the winning pitcher in the championship game. She was able to pitch all seven innings, because of the stellar job Carissa Neinas did on the mound early in the tournament, according to Neuman. He said the team plays the best competition in the state throughout the summer.

From Brussels to Jacksonport, the County was well represented by high school athletes over the weekend. The team won their second tournament of the summer and hopes to play their best again this weekend.
