Hiking Great Way To Exercise
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com

Hiking is a good way to get exercise and get some fresh air. Assistant Director and Naturalist at the Ridges Sanctuary Karen Newbern says any kind of exercise is beneficial and even a simple stroll can be enough to get your heart rate going. Newbern talks about hiking.
(Audio Here)
Newbern says footwear is very important. The type of shoe you wear depends on what type of hiker you are. Avid hikers may want to consider a hiking shoe, but often a regular gym show will do just fine. Newbern added that it is a good idea to bring a bottle of water along and take sips often. She says not to wait until you are thirsty, as this is a sign that you are already dehydrated. Newbern says that while ticks are not a big issue in Door County, other insects are a concern.

Newbern says some people are using walking sticks when hiking. Walking sticks can help keep your balance, especially on rough terrain. It is also a way to give your arms a workout. Newbern says there are guided hikes at the Ridges Sanctuary. Otherwise, trails are open to anyone who would to hike them. There is a fee to hike at the Ridges.

Only Four Batters Over .400 In Door County Baseball League
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 13, 2007

Winners in the Door County Baseball League from last week were Institute, Maplewood, Kolberg and Washington Island.  Hitting stars for the week. Matt Ash had four to lead the way.  Three by Jack Schartner, Jeff Sperber and John Price.  Getting two we had Steve Jilot, Greg Klabaugh, Justin Haertel, Craig Gunnlaugsson, Matt Fosh, Matt Bley, Robi Schartner, Paul Nelson, Mickey Lee, Jason Shimon, Scott Krueger and Jesse Miller.
Three also for Mike Jacques.  Leading  the league in batting is Ryan Tanck with a .457 average followed by Scott Price at .433 and then Greg Klaubauf with .429. After that its Steve Jilot at . 419 and Travis Leroy at .385.  Hard to believe only four batters over .400, but that's the case.  Jeff Sperber and Derek Ray tied with 4 home runs a piece after 9 games. Jeff Sperber with 13 RBIs and Steve Jilot in with 11.  Runs scored with have Jilot with l4. Brother Dave with 12.   Dave Jilot with four wins for the Ports.  Jeff Sperber leads in innings pitched and Brett Anschutz still leads in strikeouts even though not a starter.
Now for this week's  games.  Another big one and this time its at Baileys Harbor, as Kolberg with its 7 and 2 record is coming to town and its show time for the A's.  They are 6 and three and can ill afford another lost at this time.  They wish it was at night, I bet.   Kolberg is hitting the ball, and will be tough to beat.  I think the A's best chance would be with Anchutz on the mound in this one.  He has a wicked curve ball to go with his medium fast ball.  Young Chris Werg on the mound once again as Adam Bretl is in St. Louis and not much help to the team this time. Dave Nienas has been doing a great job in relief.  I will go with Kolberg to win number seven in a row after a 1 and 2 start.   West Jacksonport goes to the Lion's Den at Washington Island. As Baileys Harbor found out Sunday, these guys are tough at home. Ports won game only 4 to 2 at home in first one.  Dare I pick an upset here.  Island has some hitters and if the Ports don't right.  I still see the Jacksonport team fighting for the title, so if they lose Sunday that's almost out, so will go with them to beat the Island team for the second time this year.  Should be a dandy of a game.  Who will pitch for the Ports? Tanck or Jilot?  It will be Matt Ash for the Islanders.  Tanck lost a five hitter last week and is one tough competitor.  Institute after a big win Friday night goes to Sister Bay and look out here.  The Bays got hammered Sunday but scored 13 runs the week before.  Justin Reynolds could be the young pitcher here in his second game.  He did not pick that bad, but errors did him in. Sister Bay has hitting that's for sure, and the Cubs are not beating the ball to death as they only had three hits in 8 innings last week.  I think they should play some small ball more, as they have some guys who can run and make things happen.  Hoffman is their only power hitter.  Take some of the pressure off of Joe.  It will be interesting to see if Jake Peterson goes this way.  I say keep laying the ball down a little more and see if they can  field it. In games I have seen this year, it has not been the case.  However do not step on the plate, or you are out as Maplewood well knows.  I will go with Sister Bay to win their second game of the year, it could be their last chance.  Egg Harbor to Maplewood in the last game here. Egg Harbor hit the ball well Friday night but showed up with only two runs and they both came in the first inning.  They, unlike the Cubs, do not have team speed.  The Mets have some boys that can run in Krueger, Stegmann, Thayse and with Mickey Lee.  The Mets' Jeff Sperber is having a excellent year once again.  Tyler Roehrig looked good last Friday but could of sued his team for run support.  He is a big boy and can get the ball up there.  The question is, is he consentient enough?  Only time will tell.  Robi Schartner would like to see him start and then come in relief, if needed.  Harbor with a loss is in tough shape, that being 4 and 6. I think that is what it will be however.  Maplewood going to 6 and 4 and still in the hunt. Well that's it for week number 10. The All Star game will be July26 at Institute at 8:00PM, so mark that on your calendar. An All Star meeting to pick the North and South team will be on July 18

July 11, 2007

The Green Bay Packers came to terms this week with fourth round draft pick Allen Barbre. General Manager Ted Thompson has had great success in scouting offensive lineman talent. Last year's draft produced three eventual starters in Daryn Colledge, Jason Spitz and Tony Moll.
Rookie guard Allen Barbre is the team’s fifth of 11 draft selections to sign with the club. The Missouri Southern State graduate stands at 6-foot-4, 300-pounds. He was selected in the fourth round with the 119th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft.
A consensus Division II All-America first-team selection in 2006, Barbre started 36 of 38 career games. He was a first-team All-Mid America Intercollegiate Athletic Association honoree in 2005 and 2006.

In addition, the Packers were one of 11 teams to receive an international player as part of the NFL International Development Practice Squad Program.
Carl-Johan Bjork, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, will join the team in training camp and remain on the practice squad throughout the season.
Bjork, a 6-foot, 247-pound linebacker, is participating in the program for a second season, having spent the 2006 season with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent three seasons with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe.
Bjork will not count against the team’s eight-player practice squad roster, but is eligible to participate in practice and in preseason games. Eleven players from five countries will join teams in the AFC East, AFC South and NFC North divisions.

The Kewaunee County American Legion baseball team took a big step forward in league standings with a 15-5 win over the Green Bay Shockers last night. Luxemburg-Casco graduate and all-time single season leader in stolen bases Derek Schmelzer went 3x4 with four RBIs to lead the offensive surge. Eric Gale belted a three-run home run to shorten the game to five innings on account of the ten-run rule.
Algoma's Alex Ackerman struck out seven and allowed just five hits. Brandon Jacobs and Matt Jacobs also recorded two hits for Kewaunee County to propel them to (10-7, 8-4) on the season. Kewaunee County scored 10 runs in the second inning and led 12-0 at that time.

Northern Door managed to score just three runs in a double header against the Green Bay Blue jays. Final scores of 5-1 and 8-2 dropped the Door County squad to (3-9) in conference play. Cody Fuller managed a 3x4 performance in game two of the double header. The Blue jays jump to (4-7) in the conference standings and out of the cellar.

Tim Newton Named New Sevastopol Head Softball Coach
By Brian Sonnenberg DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 10, 2007

Tim Newton became the next Sevastopol Head Softball Coach yesterday replacing Heather Fellner-Spetz. Newton announced the hiring on “The Sports Page” on 105.1 FM WSBW at the C&C Supper Club in Fish Creek. Newton assisted Spetz the past four years including last year’s WIAA State Championship season. Newton discusses the position and his initial thoughts upon accepting the job.
(Audio Here)
Newton says his first order of business is to contact all the players. He will speak with every player in the program on Varsity and JV. During these discussions, he’ll work with each player on what they can improve this off-season. Meanwhile, Fellner-Spetz could not be happier about the new head coach.
(Audio Here)
The two share a tremendous chemistry. Newton knows he’ll rely on Fellner-Spetz for sagely advice once the season arrives. Going to the state semifinal last year and winning a state championship this season means Sevastopol has developed a solid program. Newton hopes to bridge the gap and continue the winning tradition at Sevastopol.

Just one run would make the difference in yesterday's Legion Baseball Game. Sturgeon Bay fell to first place DePere 11-10. It all came down to the final inning. Sturgeon Bay brought the bats yesterday and loaded the bases for a chance to take the game from the second ranked team in the state. However, DePere turned a double play in the bottom of the second inning to win the game. Leading hitters for Sturgeon Bay were Jordon Olsen who was 3 for 4 and Clayton Hanson was 2 for 4. The Sturgeon Bay Legion Baseball Team will play at the Metrodome in Minneapolis tomorrow against Viroqua. The team loads a bus at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow and has rented the facility for four hours to complete a double-header. Legion Coach Bob Schlicht says Manager George Husby always tries to organize a special trip for the club. Schlicht says the players usually relish the opportunity to play at major ballparks.

The Sturgeon Bay Legion Baseball team already has a relationship with people at the Metrodome, and this is the third time they will travel to Minneapolis. Sturgeon Bay plays Viroqua in the double-header tomorrow. Schlicht talks about the match up.
