Packers Running Backs Situation Unclear
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 6, 2007

Packers second round draft pick, running back Brandon Jackson, has a unique opportunity as a rookie. The opportunity to start in the backfield on opening day is a realistic goal that Jackson has set for himself. The University of Nebraska football star chose to enter the NFL draft after his junior season. If he would have elected to stay in school for his senior season, it is possible that Jackson could have been a top 10 pick in 2008.
Training camp will give Jackson and Vernand Morency an opportunity to turn heads and separate themselves from each other. Jackson hopes to follow in fellow Nebraska standout Ahman Green's footsteps. He talked about the similarities between the University of Nebraska and Green Bay.
(Audio Here)
There are many questions in the Packers backfield this season. The only consistency the team has seen besides Brett Favre was William Henderson and Ahman Green. They are both gone, so Jackson said through hard work and dedication the opportunity is there for the taking.
(Audio Here)
Jackson finished fifth in the Big 12 in rushing with 70.6 yards per game and was third in the league in all-purpose yards at a 104.2 average. In league games only, he increased his totals to 94.4 rushing yards per game and 136.4 all-purpose yards per contest, third in both categories. Jackson had four 100-yard rushing efforts, led by a career-high 182 yards at Oklahoma State, and gave the Huskers an added dimension in the passing game with 33 receptions for 313 yards.
Morency and Jackson will make preseason games more interesting for fans this season. The stage is theirs. Many question marks surround both of the young men, but answers will begin rolling in when training camp begins on July 28.

Door County Baseball League Report
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 6, 2007

Door County Baseball League scores from last week were: Egg Harbor 5 to 4 over Baileys Harbor, Kolberg 6 to 5 over Maplewood in extra innings, West Jacksonport 14 to 13 over Sister Bay in extra innings and Institute 9 to 3 over Washington Island.
Hitting stars of the week as follows: Scott Price, Justin Haertel and Marshall Larson with two for Baileys Harbor, Jason Fuller, Jake Junion two for Egg Harbor and Cody Bauer had three for the Harbor.  Steve Jilot three for the Ports, and Danny Hanson, Stuart Larsen,
Mike Stoneman, Cody Liest two for the Ports. Sister Bay's entire ball club had two or more hits.  That's the first time I've seen that in my many years of covering the DCBL. Ryan Johnson three,  along with the old pro Jim Laughlin,  two for Adam Biwer, Evan Schell, Cody Johnson,  Alex Higginbottom, Charlie Schell, Matt Higginbottom, and Paul Nelson.  Mickey Lee had two for Maplewood along with John Price and Jeff Sperber, however Jason Shimon came in a career high four.  Travis Leroy three for the Braves, along with Bob Tenor and Gregg Klaubaugh. Two for Derek Ray, Two for Matt Grandy of the Island team, and two for the Cubs, Scott Babcock and Jason Ennis, who moved from third to the outfield this last week.

Leading batter in the Door County League after seven weeks, is Ryan Tanck at .500,
followed by Chris Wery at 440 and Scott Price at 407, then comes Greg Klaubauf at .400
along with Kyle Thayse at .400. Jeff Sperber has four home runs, and 13 RBI's to lead
the league.  Runs scored we have Steve Jilot with ten.  Brett Anschutz leads the league with
strikeouts with 50.  Robbie Schartner next with 35.
Now for this week's games, Friday night we have a game at Institute with the Cubs taking on  Egg Harbor . Starting time is 8:00PM.  Both teams are four and four and looking to
make the playoffs.  My pick is a coin tosser, but I will go with the Cubs to win at home.  Kolberg at West Jacksonport on Sunday.   Both teams are now six and two and in the race for the league crown.  After Sunday, one will fall and I will go with the Ports to win at home.  Jilot is having his troubles on the mound this year and young Chris Wery is having a hard time getting past six innings. This could be a slugfest, so I am going with West Jacksonport to win 10 to 9.  For the Sister Bay at Maplewood match up, I don't think the Mets can relax here, as even the (1-7) Bayites can hit the ball.  First game 6 to 5 Maplewood.  The Mets are committing too many errors in the infield in the games I have  seen them.  My pick will be the Mets, but watch out here for a upset as they could of knocked off Jacksonport last week.  Baileys Harbor must re-group after losing last week as they head to the ever dangerous Island.  The Islanders are a different team at home or is it the visiting team parties two much the night before.  That could be as I  have heard of some wild stories from  the visiting teams. I have to stick with the Harbor team to win but am holding my breath, as the Islanders like nothing better than to knock off the fearless predictor and this goes thirty or more years back when they made me eat my words.

Crosby Gunning For Starting Kicker Spot
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 5, 2007

Green Bay Packers training camp begins in three weeks and there are a number of positions up for grabs. The kicker position is one that many people will be dialed in on throughout the pre season. Green Bay drafted Mason Crosby in the sixth round of this year's draft from the University of Colorado. He will be trying to unseat incumbent Dave Rayner.
The second year Packer player did not help his cause by missing three field goals in the last two games of the 2006 season. Rayner is known for his big leg. The same can be said of Mason Crosby. The rookie is looking forward to the friendly competition.
(Audio Here)
His all time long field goal is 57 yards at Iowa State. During Crosby's junior season, four of his five 50+ yard kicks were away from Colorado. He believes that proves the point that he is not just a good kicker because he was in high altitudes.

Crosby is used to competing for a position. In his freshman year of college, there were two scholarship kickers and he beat out his competition.
The kicker race is sure to be an exciting battle to follow throughout the summer and fall.

Common Courtesy On The Golf Course
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 4, 2007

There are some unwritten rules when you play a game of golf and instead of hearing it from the course ranger, Head Golf Professional at Maxwelton Braes Jason Daubner encourages everyone to be up to par with them before you tee off. Daubner says he is trying to get
more people out on the course but hopes they all know about the proper etiquette and common courtesy one should follow before taking that first swing. No matter young or old, all golfers should be courteous to others and that includes watching groups in front and behind you.
(Audio Here)
Daubner says 18 holes of golf should take four hours to play, with nine holes taking half that time. He says you can only go as fast as the group in front of you and that's why he encourages golfers pay attention to groups ahead and behind you.
(Audio Here)
Beginners have a lot to learn before heading out on the course for their first time and aside from chipping, pitching and putting, they need to remember common courtesy to others. Daubner talked about other things all golfers should be doing.
(Audio Here)
As far as ideal times of the day to golf, Daubner says beginners usually tee off in the early evening and he added that nine holes is usually enough for amateur golfer. Daubner says it can be very frustrating for people who expect to go out for a game of golf, only for it to be postponed because the group ahead is taking too long.

Ron Greisen Proud Of His Boys
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 3, 2007

Ron Greisen joined me last night on the Sports Page on 104.1 FM WRLU. Ron is the proud father of two professional football players that graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School.
Chris Greisen is playing in his first playoff game as a starting quarterback this weekend. The Georgia Force play on ESPN 2 Sunday at 6:00 p.m. They are the number two seed and play at home against the Philadelphia Soul.
Nick Greisen will start training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars in a couple weeks and is competing for the starting outside linebacker or "mike" linebacker position. The younger of the two boys will play at Lambeau Field on Thursday, August 23.
Ron Greisen talked a lot about the success his boys are having at the professional level. He also mentioned that he knew in high school that they were going to be special athletes.
(Audio Here)
Mary Greisen also played a huge roll in the athletic development of the boys. She used to bat left handed so that is why Chris is a lefty batter. Ron said mom would also play catch and pitch to Chris and Nick when they were younger.
There are many similarities between the Greisen boys; however, Ron said there are some major differences too.

Chris Greisen set the AFL single season touchdown record with 117 this year. His first playoff game as a starter will be on television on ESPN 2, Sunday at 6:00 p.m.

Door County League Baseball
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 2, 2007

The Door County Baseball League standings were turned inside out again yesterday. Baileys Harbor had a one game lead on two other teams but a 5-4 loss to Egg Harbor changed that this weekend. It was the second loss of the season for the A's and they are now tied with West Jacksonport and Kolberg. Egg Harbor picked up instant offense from Robbie Schartner to leadoff the eighth inning with a homerun. The home team moves to (4-4) on the summer and in striking distance once again. Cody Bauer had a nice day at the plate as well with a double and two singles.

West Jacksonport out slugged Sister Bay 14-13. Dave Jilot scored four runs for the Ports and Stewart Larson drove in the eventual game winning RBI's. The Bays received a nice performance from Ryan Johnson who had three hits and three RBIs.

Kolberg was also a one-run winner over Maplewood 6-5. Derek Ray homered and hit a two-out double in the bottom of the 10th to clinch the extra innings win. Greg Klaubauf and Bob Tenor had three hit days. Jason Shimon one upped them and smashed four hits for Maplewood. The Mets are now (4-4).

Washington Island could not string consecutive wins together and fell 9-3 to Institute. Craig Gunnlaugsson homered for the Islanders who fall to (1-7). The Cubs picked up a boost from Danny Allen. He hit a three-run double to propel Institute to their fourth win of the season.
