Although it may seem like a simple sport, kayaking actually works many different muscles in
the body. People of all ages, sizes and walks of life are kayaking and the work out you get is what you make it. Door County Kayak Tours Owner David Rack says it doesn't take much energy to paddle a kayak. With their sleek shape and light weight material, these boats are quite simple to operate. Kayaking is also a way to get a great workout. For those who do not have good arm strength, Rack suggests that you learn to use your stomach muscles to move the kayak. Rack talks about some other health benefits of kayaking.

Aside from the exercise your heart will get, Rack says many people comment about the  great core workout. With all activities, there are also many precautions one much take to ensure a safe kayaking experience. He says to be sure you have the proper equipment. Helmets and bright colors are a good idea. Rack talks about some other things to watch out for.

Bailey's Harbor Leads Door County Baseball League
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 29, 2007

In Door County Baseball League action last week, it was Baileys Harbor 10 to 8 over Maplewood, Kolberg 9 to 7 over Egg Harbor Washington Island 7 to 6 over Sister Bay in extra innings and Institute over West Jacksonport 5 to 0.  Baileys Harbor at 6 and 1 in first place now over Kolberg and West Jacksonport.
Top hitters this week, Ryan Tanck with two, Joe Hoffman with two, Steve Wipperfurth with three and Ben Rikkola with two for the Cubs. For the Islanders it was Len Atkins and Matt Ash with three and Craig Gunnlaugson with two. For Sister Bay it was Axel Higginbotham with two along with Ryan Johnson.  Kolberg was lead Jesse Miller who had four hits, three for Greg Klaubauf and Chris Wery. Derek Ray had two.  For Egg Harbor Andy Schartner had three, Brady Bauer two along with Bob Fellner.  Scott Price, Brett Anschutz and Tom Tnderson had three for Baileys Harbor and Justin Hartel had two hits.  For Maplewood we had Kyle Thayse with three along with John Price, Brad Stegmann getting two with home run Adam Schubert nd Jeff Sperber with two each.
Top Pitcher of the week was Kit Schartner of the Institute Cubs blanking West Jacksonport on a five hitter.  Top hitter in the league is Ryan Tanck with a.481 average followed by Steve Jilot at 435 and Chris Wery at .421 and Matt Foss at .400.
This week starts the second half and we have Washington Island at Institute and the Cubs won the first game so I will go with them again at home and be 4 and 4 at the end of the day. Baileys Harbor at Egg Harbor,  the Harbor, Baileys that is, is on a roll and leading the league.  Bobby Schultz former player for the harbor said this week, "they have made a believer out of me now." However, I am going with upset here and pick Egg Harbor to win. Can't pick the favorites all the time. West Jacksonport at Sister Bay and the Ports can ill afford another lost at the point in the season so I will go with them to  bounce back against Sister Bay. The marquee game of the week is at Kolberg with arch rival Maplewood coming to town.  The Mets must win here or their championship dreams could be over for 2007.  Kolberg is on a roll and hitting the ball very well with Leroy, Wery and Klabaugh having outstanding years and should be all stars this year. Maplewood has to tighten the infield up as they had four errors Sunday and that is not good and can ill afford to give teams those extra times at bat.  leads to runs in most cases. I will go with Kolberg to win in a close one as was the first one.
Special thanks to Dave Olson in Sister Bay and Bob Schultz in Baileys Harbor for enjoying the weekly report on the Door County Baseball League.  They said, "there are a lot of radios on up north, that's for sure".

Spaude Living The Basketball Dream
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 26, 2007

Sturgeon Bay standout prep athlete Sierra Spaude returned this week from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game in Madison. Spaude scored 11 points including one three-pointer in the big game for the North team. The honor of being selected to the team also included a week of practice with other star athletes in the state.
Sierra joined me Monday on "The Sports Page" on 104.1 FM WRLU. The local sports talk show is broadcast from the Ladder House in Sturgeon Bay every Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Sturgeon Bay basketball standout talked about the All-Star game.
(Audio Here)
Spaude said the practices gave her an excellent opportunity to get back into basketball shape. Spaude recently finished her senior season of track and field so her legs were ready, but said her arms were extremely sore after shooting over 100 three point shots the first practice.
It wasn't all work however. Spaude said the team went bowling, tubing on a lake in West Salem and horseback riding in La Crosse. On the fourth of seven days of practice and games, the North team had a scrimmage in La Crosse. There mode of transportation was a limousine. Spaude said she could get used to that type of a routine.
Spaude also talked about her hopes to transfer to a Division 1 or 2 school in her sophomore or junior season.
(Audio Here)
The University of Wisconsin La Crosse women's basketball team is one of the best Division 3 programs in the state. Spaude said they played extremely well in 2007.
(Audio Here)
Spaude has the drive and passion to get to the next level. She has it in her mind that she will reach a higher level of play in college and is committed to becoming a much better player. Clipper fans may have to invest in some new UW Lacrosse Eagles gear for the 2008 season.

Packers Training Camp Preview
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 26, 2007

Continuing a variation on the traditional training camp begun last year, the Green Bay Packers will hold eight night practices this summer as part of the 2007 training camp
schedule.
Training camp opens with a full-squad, full-pads workout at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, on Clarke Hinkle Field, adjacent to the Don Hutson Center. The first night practice will be held the next day, on Sunday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m. Seven of the eight night practices are preceded by a morning workout at 8:45 a.m.
Family Night is slated for Saturday, Aug. 4, at Lambeau Field. The on-field football portion of the event, which concludes with fireworks, kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
The team will hold six practices over the first four days of camp before an off day on Wednesday, Aug. 1. As is customary, the team will not practice on the days following preseason games, nor on the day following the annual Family Night scrimmage. In addition, if scheduled, practices the day before preseason games will not be open to the public.

Important dates on the preseason calendar include:
Saturday, July 28 – First practice, 2 p.m., Hinkle Field (full pads)
Sunday, July 29 – First night practice, 6:30 p.m., Hinkle Field (full pads)
Saturday, Aug. 4 – Family Night intra-squad scrimmage, 6:30 p.m., Lambeau Field
Tuesday, Aug. 28 – Last practice open to public, 10 a.m., Hinkle Field (shells); NFL-mandated roster reduction, to 75 players
Saturday, Sept. 1 – NFL-mandated roster reduction, to 53 players

An economic boom for the Green Bay area, training camp annually attracts approximately 100,000 visitors and gives the local economy a $35 million boost, according to the Packer Country Regional Tourism Office. Camp again will welcome visitors from all over the
country, and all over the world.
This marks Green Bay’s 62nd training camp, a tradition that began in 1946 under Curly
Lambeau. One of the most intimate preseason settings in the NFL, Packers training camp is unique in several respects. Players have been riding kids’ bicycles to practice since the Vince Lombardi era, and the team has lived in the dorm rooms at nearby St. Norbert College since 1958, the league’s longest training camp relationship between a team and school.

Justin Hartel was the winning pitcher. The Mets fell to (4-3).
