Tough Competition In Door County Baseball League
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 13, 2007

The Door County League has no undefeated teams after five weeks with the lost of west Jacksonport to Maplewood.  Baileys Harbor on a mission this year with a 12 to 3 win
now also 4 and one.  Maplewood with its win is 3 and 2 along with Kolberg who also won 12 to 1 over the Cubs.  Egg Harbor with its come from behind win Sunday over the Islanders are three and two also.  Looks like the race is now on for first, thanks to the Mets big win Sunday.
Top hitters last week, Chad Kodonko two along with Brett Anschutz, Justin Hartel and
Cole Biwer. Adam Biwer and Alex Higginbottom had two also.  For the Islanders we had Mike Jorgenson with three, Matt Ash two, and Ben Young two. For Egg Harbor it was Jake Junion two and Tyler Roehrig two.  For Kolberg, three by Travis Leroy, and Chris Wery, and two goes to Jesse Miller, Greg Klaubauf and Kurt Ray.  Dave Jilot, and brother Steve had three for the Ports and manager Ryan Tanck with two. John Price had two for the Mets.  Top pitchers, Jeff Sperber, Mets, Brett Anschutz a1so Robbi Schartner Egg Harbor, and Chris Wery for Kolberg.
This week marks a historical event in the Door County League as Baileys Harbor is hosting
institute on Friday.  First game ever under the new lights in the Harbor.  That's right we now
have two teams with lights, the Cubs also have them.  Will we have more in the future? Game time is 7:30 with a Babe Ruth game at 5:30  and a good fish meal  being  served between games.  Official dedication before the second game.  My pick here will be Baileys Harbor team on a night to remember  for years to come.  Be there and take in the history of Door County League Baseball.  Egg Harbor at West Jacksonport.  Can the Ports get back on track this week.  Jilot only gave up six hits Sunday in the lost.  The Indians are coming on and will be tough to beat but its at the ports field.  Ports to win. Maplewood at the island,  watch out Mets for this one as the Islanders are in a foul mood, being (0-5) this year.  islanders had a few errors last week and it cost them the game. Can they correct this as they are a young team.  I am going with a big upset here and pick the Islanders to win over the Mets. Sister Bay at Kolberg.  Return home for manager Clark Erickson of Sister Bay as the pitched for Kolberg years ago.  The Kolberg team look like it is back on track with Chris Wery on the mound as it looks like Adam Bretl will not wee much action in the our league this year as he is pitching  in the Fox Valley.  Sister Bay hit the ball hard Sunday, but pitching is still not there and I will to  go with Kolberg to win the game at home and go (4-2) and act like the 2006 champs that there were.

The Green Bay Packers will present a premiere viewing of the team's 2006 highlights film, "Pride and Progress: The Story of the 2006 Green Bay Packers," in the Legends Club of the Lambeau Field Atrium Monday evening, June 18.

The initial public showing of the film, with free admission, will begin at 7 o'clock. Access to the Atrium area will be through the Miller Brewing Company Gate, with film attendees then taking the escalator to the Legends Club on the fourth level of the Atrium.

Packers offensive lineman Daryn Colledge, a co-recipient of team offensive rookie of the year honors, will be on hand to address the team's upcoming season and answer questions. Colledge also will be available for autographs following the program.

"Pride and Progress" chronicles the Packers’ 2006 season and features the impressive cinematography of NFL Films. The film highlights several of the team’s impressive performances from last year, including the four straight wins to finish the season which kept the club in the playoff hunt until the final weekend.

Among the other performances featured are the development of the young offensive line, offensive players Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and Vernand Morency, and defensive performers Nick Barnett, Aaron Kampman, A.J. Hawk and Cullen Jenkins.

A Brett Favre feature is included, as well as a segment on the team’s dominating season-ending win over the eventual NFC Champion Chicago Bears.

A regular NFL Films feature, the "miked-up" segment, will be enjoyed in a few different places in the film as Head Coach Mike McCarthy leads his team through a training camp practice and Favre displays his never-ending enthusiasm during a home victory over the Vikings.

In addition, the film is punctuated by dramatic, voice-over descriptions of impact plays by Wayne Larrivee and Larry McCarren, of the Packers Radio Network. Produced, written and edited by NFL Films, in conjunction with the Packers' public relations department, it is narrated by Robb Webb.

It will be available for non-commercial group showings (church, fraternal and civic groups, etc.), in DVD format, through the Packers' office beginning in July, by writing in care of "Packers Highlight Film" at P.O. Box 10628, Green Bay, WI, 54307-0628.

The film also is scheduled to be available for purchase through the Packers Pro Shop, located in the Lambeau Field Atrium, starting in late July.

Sevastopol Baseball Team Reloading
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 12, 2007

This week on the Sports Page on 104.1 FM WRLU Sevastopol Baseball Coach John Berns talked about the 2007 Pioneer team and what his expectations are for next year. Berns finished his fourteenth season coaching the boys at Sevastopol High School.

Berns was especially proud of his first team all-conference catcher Woody Schartner. Coach Berns informed listeners that Schartner will be attending Lakeland College in Sheboygan with intentions of playing baseball. He talked about Woody's senior season.

(Audio Here)

Cody Leist is another player that Coach Berns will sorely miss next season. Leist earned a spot on the second team all-conference list for his play on the infield. Carroll College has invited Leist to try out for the baseball team, according to Berns. Leist intends on attending Carroll with his eyes set on eventually cracking the starting lineup.

Sevastopol will have three underclassmen that will lead the returning letter winners. Owen Hubner was a second team all-conference selection and had an amazing season at the plate.

The Pioneers baseball team will look to improve in the off season. Berns said seven players are playing on the Northern Door County American Legion team and will gain valuable experience over the summer.

The Sports Page will continue next week at 7:00 p.m. when Southern Door softball coach Pat Delcore joins me to talk about the season that was. The Eagles were runners up in the WIAA Division 2 tournament.

Perfect Ending For Seniors And Fellner-Spetz
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 10, 2007

Sevastopol softball coach Heather Fellner-Spetz could not think of a better way to leave the game she loves. The senior class of Pioneer ball players deserves this and the underclassmen stepped up to an extremely high level of play too, according to the coach.

Spetz coached her final softball game in the WIAA Division 3 State Championship yesterday at Goodman Field in Madison. The 6-3 victory over Arcadia was the icing on a season to remember for the players, parents, coaches, student body and faculty. The entire school district rallied behind this group of young ladies. The 2007 Sevastopol softball team brought an entire community closer together this weekend.

The Pioneers scored four runs in the fourth inning against Arcadia. Brittany Jilot, Carissa Neinas and Sara Junion recorded RBI's in the inning to lift the squad to a 4-2 lead.

Senior pitcher Carissa, "Hop N' Pop", Neinas kept the ball low in the strike zone throughout the championship game and allowed her defense to make plays, and they did. She also led Sevastopol with a 3x4 performance at the plate. Coach Spetz talked about why this team was successful.

Jilot, Notz and Niki LaPlant recorded two hits in the championship game as well. The offensive consistency and the fundamentally sound defense allowed the Pioneers to take down two undefeated teams at state.

Southern Door Falls In State Final
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 10, 2007

The Southern Door softball team ended their 2007 season with a 5-1 loss to Union Grove in the WIAA Division 2 State Championship yesterday. The Eagles ran into one of the most dominant pitching performances in the history of the state tourney. Kristyn Hansen struck out 13 Eagle batters.

Sophomore Southern Door pitcher Courtney Wautier allowed 10 hits and struck out four on the afternoon. Wautier was just one of seven sophomore starters.

The loss was the school's first in three appearances in the state championship. However, if this year's performance was any indication for what is to come, Eagle fans will have a lot to cheer about for the next two years.

The Eagles had six hits in the game and scored the lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Kristi Villers tripled and scored on a wild pitch two batters later.

Southern Door Head Coach Pat Delcore is extremely proud of the way his team played all season. He commented on the long standing tradition of baseball and softball at the school.

(Audio Here)

Karlee Vandertie led the way at the plate for Southern Door with a 3x4 performance. Miranda Duquaine, Robyn Pichette, Wautier and Kristi Villers also had hits for the Eagles.

It was a magical weekend in Madison for two Door County School Districts. Sevastopol fans cheered on Southern Door and Eagles fans supported the Pioneers program. The girl's proved that the Packerland Conference is one of the toughest softball conferences in the state.
