Packerland Softball Teams Head To State Finals Today
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com

Both Packerland softball teams competing for a chance to get to the state softball tournament had great games yesterday. Sevastopol and Southern Door were victorious and
play again today for their chance to be known as State Champions. Sevastopol hit the field first yesterday. Predictions for yesterday's match indicated it would be no walk in the park. The Pioneers were scheduled to face defending WIAA Division 3 State Softball champs and undefeated Grantsburg. Solid pitching and great offense shut out Grantsburg 4-0. Sevastopol got on the board in the 5th inning. An error by Grantsburg cost them the first run. An RBI single by Sara Junion brought some the second. In the seventh, an RBI by Jenna Wheat brought home one and a sac groundout by Brittany Jilot brought home the fourth and final run of the game. Carissa Neinas threw yesterday for Sevastopol. The Pioneers play undefeated Arcadia today at 12:30PM.

The Southern Door Eagles didn't take the field until 6:00PM yesterday. The final score was 4-2 and gave the Eagles a ticket to the state finals today. The girls seemed quite nervous to start, committing a few errors that Rice Lake capitalized on, as they got on the board in the second inning. Rice Lake scored again in the fifth but that was all they had yesterday. Things got going for the Eagles in the fourth yesterday. A final insurance run in the seventh sealed the victory. Leading the way on offense for the Eagles was Kristi Villers who was 2x3. Kate Klaubauf went 1x1 with a triple. Eagle pitcher Courtney Wautier recorded 6 strikeouts. Southern Door plays Union Grove today at 3:00PM.

Door County Baseball Report
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 8, 2007

The fourth week is in the books and after the dust settled in Jacksonport we have the Ports in first place all alone with its nail biting 3 to 1 win over Baileys Harbor. Maplewood down 3 to 2 in the ninth rallied at home to beat the Institute team 5 to 3 on a Jeff Sperber home run with one one and a two strike pitch on him. Very good effort by young  Kit Schartner for 8 innings. Egg Harbor behind three home runs beat the Sister bay team 7 to 2. Brady Brauer and Eric DeJardine went back  to back and last years batting champ Jack Schartner hit a three run homer to seal the game. Kolberg finally got their bats going and won 11 to 4 over the Islanders who are now 0 and 4. Lets look at the top batters this week. Patrick Larson for Baileys Harbor, Steve Jilot and Ryan Tanck two for the Ports. Travis Leroy had three for Kolberg and Derek Ray two fir Kolberg. Cory Fuller and Joe Hoffman two for the Cubs, Mikey Lee three for the Mets and Jeff Spuirber and John Price two for them. For Egg Harbor , Jason Fuller three hits, Cody Bauer 2 and Brady 2 also along with Robbi Schartner.

Top pitching performances were from Dave Jilot, Brett Anchutz, Kit Schartner, Jeff Sperber, Chris Wery and Robbi Schartner.

Week five coming up, Kolberg at Institute. The Cubs won two and now lost two, Kolbberg is at 2 and 2.

Also Kit Schartner looked good Sunday in defeat. Chris Wery has been a competitor all his young life and will be tough. This is a toss up game, but I will go with Kolberg.

West Jacksonport at Maplewood  and we will see if the Mets can derail the Ports who are now on a roll at 4 and 0 under new manager Ryan Tanck.

Another close one, but I  will go with the Ports to win because of the addition of Stuart Larson. Jilot vs Sperber should be a dandy.

Washington Island is coming to the mainland again and this time they need a win badly. Egg Harbor at 2 and 2 now after a bad 0 and 2  start. Islanders cannot afford another loss  now or the playoffs are out of the question.

However, I have to go with Mark Stoegers nine in this one and pick Egg Harbor. Sorry to Jim Jorgenson. Baileys Harbor at Sister Bay. This is a rivalry game, as most of these guys came from Gibraltar High School and look for bragging rights.  Till next time witch is July 29th. Baileys Harbor lost a tough one Sunday on a 6 hitter by Anschutz. Sister Bay beat a fine Institute team early on. This is tougher to pick than you think, but I will go with Bob Niedzwiecki’s team to win on the road.

Foxes Bats Too Much For Spartans
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 6, 2007

Luxemburg-Casco baseball jumped out to a quick one run lead in the first inning in yesterday's WIAA Division 2 Sectional Semi-Final game with Fox Valley Lutheran. The 12-3 end result would not be what the Spartans were looking for in Clintonville. The Spartans would hold a one run lead into the third inning when the Foxes exploded for five runs.

A leadoff homerun by the number nine batter, with a .147 batting average on the season, started the rally. Dan Gulbranson followed with a solo homerun of his own.

L-C starting pitcher Brandon Alexander gave up five runs in the innings before being pulled. Craig Demmin would relieve him and hold FVL until the sixth inning when they added four more runs.

L-C could not match the power of FVL at the plate. The Foxes belted three homeruns and hit six more to the warning track or off the wall.

The Spartans season ends with an overall record of 18-5. FVL went on to defeat Clintonville in the Sectional Final.

Sectional Semi-Final Baseball On 96.7 FM Today
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 5, 2007

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans baseball team will travel to Clintonville today to play in the WIAA Division 2 sectional tournament. The game will be broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK.

The Spartans lost to West DePere in the sectional final one year ago. The good news is that Fox Valley Lutheran defeated the Phantoms in regional play. On the other hand, The Foxes have been predicted to be the top team in the sectional.

L-C has been an underdog all season and that will not change today. The team lost an accomplished class of seniors from 2006. This team has been built for speed and batting for average.

Head Coach Terry Jorgensen knows that FVL has a tough lineup and will not give the pitching staff any breaks. Coach will talk with me in the pre-game show starting at 12:45 p.m. on 96.7 FM. He said FVL will probably be the toughest competition they have gone up against all season.

The Spartans are coming off a regional final win over Southern Door where the team scored four runs in the eighth inning to upset the number one seeded Eagles. Coach Jorgenson said his team is coming off an emotional high and will be ready to play. The Spartans take the field in Clintonville this afternoon and you can catch all the action on 96.7 FM.

Two teams entered play in the Door County League yesterday with unblemished records. West Jacksonport would prove they were top dog with a 3-1 win over Baileys Harbor. Mike Jorgenson and Matt Foss joined the homerun parade for Washington Island. The team has yet to earn a win on the season. Matt Ash took the loss.

Maplewood edged Institute 5-3 with a come from behind victory in the ninth inning. Jeff Sperber hit a walk-off two-run home run to end the game. The win puts Maplewood in a tie with Institute at (2-2) on the season. They are tied for third place in the standings with two other teams.

Maplewood was led by Mickey Lee with a three hit performance. Joe Hoffman had two doubles for Institute. Jason Shimon earned the victory on the mound in a relief effort. He took over for Jeff Sperber in the seventh inning and had no problem in the two innings he threw.

Robbie Schartner was the winning pitcher for Egg Harbor in a 7-2 win over Sister Bay. Brady Bauer and Eric DeJardin hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth, and Jack Schartner also homered for Egg Harbor. The win places them in a four way tie for third as well at (2-2).
