L-C Softball Season Ends In Denmark
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 23, 2007

A two out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning by Denmark first baseman Carissa Vogel marked the end of the season for the Luxemburg-Casco softball team. In a game broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK, the Spartans and Vikings played an intense game for a chance to play in the regional final. Luxemburg-Casco fell 4-3 in the WIAA Division 2 softball regional game but deserves a lot of credit for giving Denmark a real scare.

The Spartans scored in the first inning and took a one run lead. Denmark pitcher Kayla Krueger hit a solo home run in the third inning to even things up. L-C would trail by two runs heading into the sixth inning. Danielle Mleziva and Steph Jubert came up with clutch hits in the inning to tie the score up at three a piece. A play at the plate was the third out of the inning and could have provided L-C with a potential game winning run. Spartans Head Coach Tom Giachino contested the call to no avail.

Lauren Roberts came in to the game as a reliever but earned the win. Kalli Schmelzer took the loss on the mound for the Spartans but did strike out five.

Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament Results
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 21, 2007

The 2007 Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament produced many huge smallmouth bass caught from Little Sturgeon up to Washington Island. Donald Hewkin and Dave Davis from Chicago earned first place for the fourth time in the tournament's history. They had a total weight of 51.61 pounds for both days.
Hewkin and Davis had less than a pound advantage heading into Sunday. They had a moderate catch of 24.49 pounds on Sunday and did enough to take the tourney.
Mark Duerr and Hans Juech from West Allis were in second place in the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament after the first day. They had a total of 26.45 pounds between the six smallmouth bass. Duerr caught a monster weighing in at 5.77 pounds using a jerk bait just before noon on Saturday. Duerr was the winner of the big bass competition with that catch.
Duerr and Juech needed to stay consistent on day two. They had the third lowest weight out of the top fifteen teams on Sunday and dropped to fourth for the tournament.
Duerr was thrilled with the results for the weekend and could not say enough about the fishery in Door County. He said Green Bay is the best place to catch smallmouth in the state. He added that the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament is by far the best tournament in Wisconsin.
(Audio Here)
Tournament Director Ken Ellis said the mortality rate for the smallmouth bass caught is less than 2%. The smallmouth were released in four different locations throughout the peninsula. The flats and the quarry in Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Little Sturgeon are the four drop off spots.
Cash and prizes given away for the tournament totaled $450,000. Ellis said the fees for a team would stay the same for next year. The cost to enter the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament is $410 per team.

Packers Mini-Camp Wraps Up
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 20, 2007

Green Bay Packers mini-camp will conclude today and Head Coach Mike McCarthy was pleased with the team’s performance. Rookies had their first look at what the NFL game is really like with the veteran players in camp.
Young players like rookie receiver David Clowney has been taking notes and watching Donald Driver. Driver has worked hard to be the veteran that goes the extra mile to help young receivers transition to the NFL. Clowney said he is relieved to have older players welcome him into camp.

Brett Favre was at all practices this weekend. Neither Favre nor third year QB Aaron Rodgers participated in any live team activities. Both did throw passes in 7-on-7 situations and passing drills.
Rodgers said he feels confident he will be able to participate in training camp. After breaking his foot late in 2006, Rodgers spent the entire off-season rehabbing the foot and working a lot on his upper body strength. He commented that his lean muscle mass is much higher heading into this season.
The backup QB also noted that Favre appears to be in great shape.

Robert Ferguson did not participate in the mini camp but was present. The wide receiver feels this season is critical for him. Ferguson is another player that spent the entire off-season rehabbing from injury. He believes he is 100% but the coaching staff held him out of the weekend’s practices as a precautionary measure. The Packers will take 10 days off and be back for Organized Team Activities on Thursday, May 31.
