Triumphant In First Round By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com May 18, 2007 In the first round of softball regional playoff action, Sturgeon Bay defeated Two Rivers 12-2. Stephanie Shefchik took the mound for the Clippers and struck out 5 batters. Leading the way for Sturgeon Bay was Jenny LaLuzerne who was 3x3 and Erin Schartner who was 2x4. In Luxemburg yesterday, the Spartans shut out Valders 8-0. L-C got on the board early putting up 3 runs. The Spartans secured an additional 5 insurance runs throughout the rest of the game. Leading the way for L-C in slugging was Brittany DeLain who was 3x4 and had 4 RBIs. Steffi Kinnard and Kim DePeau were both 2x4. Mariah Mleziva was 2x3. Freshman Kalli Schmelzer threw for the Spartans. She had an impressive game and struck out 10 batters. Sevastopol continues to stay strong as they defeated Manitowoc Roncalli 12-2. Leading sluggers for the Pioneers were Cathy Kaye and Brittany Jilot. They were both 2x3. Lacey Weber was 2x4. Sevastopol's Niki LaPlant hit a homerun. Carissa Neinas was the winning pitcher. She struck out 6. Kewaunee came back from behind yesterday and defeated Brillion in extra innings 4-3. Kewaunee scored first with 1 run in the first inning. However Brillion answered back with 3 runs in the fifth to take the lead. 2 more runs by Kewaunee in the bottom of the fifth tied the game. An RBI single by Kelli Schleis won the game for Kewaunee in the bottom of the sixth. Heather Bloniarz pitched for Kewaunee. She struck out 17 batters. The bats were hot for Algoma yesterday as they beat Reedsville 13-1. Leading the way for the Wolves was Shana Vandertie who was 2x3, Kayla Major 3x4, Jenny Haasch 2x2 and Cassandra Massart 3x3. Vandertie also hit a homerun. Lyndsay Swoboda threw for Algoma and struck out 3 batters. In Fish Creek yesterday, Gibraltar was victorious over Stockbridge 9-3. Consistent hitting and tough defense for the Vikings won them the game. Lee McKonkey tallied 4 RBIs for Gibraltar and Emily Anderson went 2x3. Katie Sawyer threw for the Vikings and struck out 5 batters. |

It was a back and forth battle between the two teams. The Eagles got on the board early and put up 4 runs in the first inning. L-C tied it up in the following inning. A lone run from the Spartans in the fourth was all L-C needed to win the game. Leading the way for the Spartans was Derek Schmelzer who was 2x3. For the Eagles, pitcher Joel Delorit went 2x3 yesterday. He was also the strikeout leader with 12. Brandon Alexander threw for L-C. Sevastopol took the win against Gibraltar yesterday 6-1. The Pioneers put up 1 run in the first inning then added 5 more in the third. Leading the way for Sevastopol was Joe Sawyer who was 2x3 with 2 RBIs. Aaron Hasenjager added 2 RBIs as well. Woody Schartner pitched for the Pioneers. He struck out 8. Algoma shut out NEW Lutheran 10-0. Leading the way in slugging for the Wolves was Colin Lohenry. He went 2x2, hit a homerun and had 4 RBIs. Alex Aackerman went 2x3 and had 2 RBIs. Jake LeBotte threw for the Wolves. He struck out 3. Oconto defeated Sturgeon Bay 7-2. The Clippers got on the board in the fourth but that wasn't enough to take the win. Nate Anshutz pitched for the Clippers. He was the strikeout leader with 5. Denmark shut out Kewaunee 2-0. Josh Leiterman and Neal Schweiner both went 2x3 and recorded an RBI each for the Vikings. Craig Hansen was the winning pitcher and struck out 7. |
| Spartan Softball Ready For Round One Of The

Luxemburg-Casco will be hosting Valders in a game heard on 96.7 FM WBDK. L-C managed just two conference wins this season but did enough to earn the number four seed. They host the fifth seeded Vikings. L-C won a game with Valders earlier in the season. The Engine Rebuilding Service Pre-Game Show will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Spartans Head Coach Tom Giachino said his team has had an inability to score runs early. L-C will look to break through early and often this afternoon. Coach Giachino talked about what it will take to win. | Kewaunee Meets Brillion In Round One By Brian Sonnennerg DoorCountyDailyNews.com May 17, 2007 Kewaunee softball hosts Brillion this afternoon in the first round of the WIAA Softball Playoffs. Kewaunee drew a three seed in the region, while Brillion will play as a six. Brillion hails from the Olympian Conference and went 11-6. Kewaunee finished the 2007 season with an 11-8 record. The 2007 season started rocky for Northeast Wisconsin teams as the weather cancelled or postponed many games. With practice time cut down, all teams needed to make adjustments on the fly. Kewaunee’s region also features two top Packerland Conference schools. Both Algoma and Sevastopol hold the number one and two seeds respectively. We’ll have coverage of Kewaunee and Brillion on 102.1 WRKU. Pre-game starts at 4:15 p.m. with the opening pitch slated for 4:30 p.m. |

The Wolves moved into a tie for the conference's small-school title with Sevastopol. Sevastopol and Algoma finished the season with a (10-3) conference record. The 10 run rule shortened last night's game with NEW Lutheran to five innings. Lyndsay Swoboda was the winning pitcher and struck out five. Shortstop Sam Zastrow hit a solo home run; Kayla Major had three hits and two RBIs and Jenny Haasch had a 3x3 day at the plate. The Wolves offense exploded for 10 runs on seven hits in the fourth inning. Sevastopol topped Northern Door County rival Gibraltar 14-0. The Pioneers held up their end of the bargain in the chase for the championship. They also played just five innings because of the ten run rule. Shortstop Sara Junion was 3x4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the way offensively. Courtney Kaye earned the win on the mound, throwing a one-hitter. Niki LaPlant and Brittany Jilot both had two hits on the afternoon. Southern Door clinched a share of the Packerland Conference's large school championship by defeating Kewaunee 16-0. Sophomore Courtney Wautier was the winning pitcher and recorded two hits. The Eagles had 15 hits on their way to victory in six innings. Liz Neuman and Kate Klaubauf had three hits apiece and Molly Swanson and Kristi Villers each had two hits in the Southern Door win. Sturgeon Bay played spoiler for Denmark last night in an 8-2 win. A win for the Vikings would have given them the outright large school conference championship. Senior pitcher Stephanie Shefchik allowed seven hits but struck out 10 batters. Abi Hartel hit a home run and went 2x4 for the Clippers offensively. Lauren Roberts took the loss on the mound but managed to strikeout 11 Clipper batters. Erin Schartner went 3x4 and Sarah McCaulley was 2x4 at the plate for Sturgeon Bay. Luxemburg-Casco's struggles continued on the diamond. They fell to Oconto by the score of 4-2. They were almost no-hit. Natalie Ruechel threw 6 1/3 innings of flawless softball until L-C catcher Jenna Johnson cracked an RBI single in the seventh inning. The Spartans fell to (2-11) in conference play. They had the bases loaded in the seventh inning but could only plate two before Ruechel recorded her sixth and final strikeout of the evening. Winning pitcher Troy Jorgenson struck out nine batters and had a 3x4 day at the plate. Patrick Larsen also recorded three hits and a home run for Sturgeon Bay. The team moves to (7-4) on the season and a game and a half ahead of Denmark in the standings. Simon Rabas, Clayton Hansen and Nate Felhofer all had two hits for the Clipper's as well. Algoma shutout NEW Lutheran 20-0 in five innings. Alex Ackerman threw a no-hitter, striking out 13 Blazer batters. Senior Derek Swoboda had two home runs and five RBIs to lead Wolves offensively. Kirk Rodrian went 4x4 with two RBIs, and Eric Ackerman went 3x5 with a double, triple and five RBIs. Luxemburg-Casco edged Oconto 9-7. Craig Demmin was the winning pitcher. Eric Gale led the Spartan attack, going 3x4 with two doubles. Sevastopol blanked Gibraltar 7-0. Sevastopol's Cody Leist threw a nearly flawless one-hitter, retiring the last 13 batters. Justin Reynolds' single in the second inning was the only hit for Gibraltar. The Pioneers busted out for five runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Owen Hubner went 2x2 at the plate. Southern Door defeated Kewaunee 12-2 in six innings. The win puts the Eagles at 11-1 in the conference. Senior Joel Delorit went 3x4 with a double and two RBIs and Dylan Welch and Tyler DeBauche each picked up three hits. Michael Blizel was the winning pitcher. He struck out seven batters. Last year's champions, Kolberg took the first step in defending their crown by defeating Maplewood 4-3. The Braves scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. Rob Ray was the winning pitcher in his first Door County League start. He combined with Travis LeRoy and Mike Wery Jr. for the run scoring at bats. Chris Wiery came on in relief and picked up the save for Kolberg. Jeff Sperber hit a home run in the game for the Mets. Institute crushed Washington Island 14-6. The game was played on the Island and a stiff breeze factored into play. The Cubs scored eight runs in the second inning to set the tone early. Cory Fuller had three hits including a homerun and Paul Parent and Jason Annis hit three-run home runs for Institute. Parent was the winning pitcher. Mark Woerfel took the loss on the mound. Matt Foss had a 4x4 day at the plate for Washington Island. Baileys Harbor just got by Egg Harbor 3-2. Brett Anshutz earned the win, striking out 10 in five innings. Robby Schartner was the losing pitcher but did belt a homerun in the game. Matt Bley had a 2x3 day to lead the A's. West Jacksonport played extremely well and topped Sister Bay 13-1. Nick Johnson had four RBIs to lead the Ports attack. Ryan Tanck, James Larsen and Josh Schwartz each had two hit performances to lead the Ports'. |

In Institute, Sevastopol shut out Wrightstown 7-0. Jenna Wheat started on the mound for the Pioneers and Carissa Neinas wrapped things up in the sixth and seventh innings. The two combined to throw a one-hit shutout. Jenna Wheat struck out two batters in five innings. In relief, Neinas struck out two in the final two innings. Sevastopol also had a good day at the plate. Niki LaPlant went 2x3 with a solo home run. Lacey Weber also cleared the bases with a two-run dinger in the contest. Brittany Jilot added a 2x3 performance for Sevastopol as they cruised to their 15th win if the season. Gibraltar outlasted Gillett 9-8 in non-conference play. Katie Sawyer was the winning pitcher as Gibraltar's bats did the job on the road. Lee McConkey and Val Gray each had 2x4 performances. Eli Opetz was 2x3 for the Vikings in the non-conference win. The Southern Door squad won the Brillion tournament yesterday. The Eagles defeated Oostburg 3-0 in the tournament championship. The team played solid defense and were led by Courtney Wautier on the mound. |
