Kewaunee pulled off a huge upset in Packerland Conference softball last night in Brussels. The first place Southern Door Eagles struggled offensively and fell 1-0 in a pitchers dual at home. It was a double in third inning by Kewaunee's Kim Pribek that secured the lone run of the ballgame. Heather Bloniarz didn't have as many strikeouts as her opponent on the mound but she earned the win. Southern Door's Courtney Wautier had nine strikeouts

Sevastopol had an impressive outing against Denmark in non-conference softball. They defeated the Vikings 7-2. Sophomore Dakota Cordier earned the win on the mound while striking out four Denmark batters. The Pioneers offense managed seven hits against the strong arm of Lauren Roberts. Cathy Kaye led the way with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI.

Luxemburg-Casco edged Shawano 4-2 in Bay Conference softball. Mariah Mleziva had three hits for the Spartans on their way to an impressive conference victory. Kalli Schmelzer pitched a nice ball game and led L-C to victory.

Kyle Trelka Signs Letter Of Intent For UW-Milwaukee
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
April 29, 2008

Sturgeon Bay senior Kyle Trelka signed his national letter of intent for UW-Milwaukee yesterday in the high school library. He will swim on scholarship in the fly, free and backstrokes as well as the individual medley event. Trelka was a state champion swimmer after solid performances in Madison earlier this year. He turned down scholarship offers from Missouri and Kentucky.
The letter signing took place in front of friends, family and faculty. Kyle's mom, Sandy Trelka, said it was a huge relief to have this decision made.
(Audio Here)
Choosing between Milwaukee and Kentucky was a decision Kyle mulled over for months. He visited UK last week and Sandy said after he returned from that trip, the decision became clear.
(Audio Here)
Sturgeon Bay swim coach Cap Wolf, parents Sandy and Dan and younger sister Taylor were seated at the head table for the signing yesterday. Taylor is also an accomplished swimmer and may follow in her brother's footsteps in terms of a swimming career.
After the national letter of intent was signed, there was one burning question left to ask Sandy Trelka.
(Audio Here)
It sounds like Kyle will still be working in the family business this summer. Therefore, if you would like to congratulate the senior, he will probably be serving up soft serve at his parents ice cream stand.

Packers Offense Addressed With First Two Picks - Complete Draft Recap
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
April 28, 2008

The Green Bay Packers draft wrapped up yesterday with nine picks. Three first round draft choices addressed the team’s needs at the skilled position set. A surprising first pick was Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson. Green Bay did not have a first round pick as General Manager Ted Thompson elected to trade down and picked up a fourth round pick in addition to an early second round pick (36th) from the New York Jets.
A college walk-on, Nelson finished his career a consensus All-American. He shattered school and Big 12 Conference season-records in 2007 by catching 122 passes for 1,606 yards and 11 touchdowns. Nelson scored twice on five punt returns for 264 yards and finished with a school record 140 points.
The pick will provide competition in an already deep and talented receiver pool. Jordy Nelson should also compete with Tramon Williams, Will Blackmon and Koren Robinson for the punt return job.

The Packers were back on the clock with the 56th selection and pulled the trigger on one of the most talented quarterbacks in the draft. Louisville senior Brian Brohm fell into the Packers lap as Aaron Rodgers did in 2005. This time G.M. Ted Thompson decided to provide a backup to the unproven Rodgers with a young player that could be ready to play this season.
Brohm is another player with a list of attributes a mile long. He finished his career as the Big East Conference's all-time record holder in passing yardage, becoming the first player in league history to throw for over 10,000 yards.
The pick would seemingly put even more pressure on the "quarterback of the future" Aaron Rodgers. If Rodgers struggles, there is a player waiting in the wings that the franchise has invested a high draft pick and a good deal of money in that could create quarterback controversy.

Day one of the 2008 NFL Draft concluded for the Packers with a need pick in cornerback Patrick Lee at number 60 overall. Charles Woodson and Al Harris are nearing their mid-thirties, which is an indicator their careers could end within the next two to three seasons. Lee played safety and kickoff returner for the University of Auburn as well.
Lee is a player that could replace one of the Packers' bookend cornerbacks and step into the bump and run style where Green Bay excels. Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy said, "We like his size, his physicalness. You see the tackling and his aggressiveness in bump-and-run. He really fits the temperament, the attitude and our style of play."

Day 2:

Day 2 of the NFL draft got off to a quick start with the Packers making a selection at number 91. Another need pick was made when redshirt sophomore tight end out of Texas, Jermichael Finley was taken. This was another surprising pick, because many national draft analysts had a handful of other tight end prospects scoring higher than the young Finley.
The scouting report on the Texas youngster is that he has tremendous upside but lacks the discipline to this point to excel at blocking. The pick addressed a depleted tight end corps after Bubba Franks signed with the New York Jets in free agency. Finley will join Donald Lee and unproven commodities in Tory Humphrey and Ryan Krause.

Green Bay executed another draft day trade with the New York Jets early in day two. Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy traded up to the 102 selection to draft Wake Forrest defensive end Jeremy Thompson. The Packers gave up picks number 113 and 162 to move up and pick the brother of current Green Bay offensive lineman Orrin Thompson. The two will have some interesting training camp battles as Orrin plays tackle and will likely line up against his younger brother Jeremy who plays on the outside corner on the D-line.
The knock on Jeremy Thompson is the health of his knee. He underwent a major ACL surgery in college where doctors took a piece of his hamstring and transplanted that into his knee. The defensive end has impressive balance and lateral agility with a great ten-yard burst. He could grow into a legit understudy behind Aaron Kampman, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Cullen Jenkins.

The brain trust in the Packers draft "war room" conducted another trade in the fourth round. They traded away pick number 128 for a fifth and seventh round selection from the St. Lois Rams. Then they picked offensive lineman out of the University of Central Florida Josh Sitton. He is projected to play guard or center in the NFL. Sitton believes he has an opportunity to compete for a starting spot at one of the guard positions.
Ted Thompson was wheeling and dealing again. This time, a trade was executed with the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers traded pick 137 to Minnesota for a fifth and seventh rounder.

The lone pick for the Pack in round five came at number 150. The selection addressed the need at offensive tackle. The Louisville connection between quarterback Brian Brohm and O-lineman Breno Giacomini will be refueled this season on the Packers practice field. Giacomini and Jason Spitz played on the offensive line together in college and have talked regularly with his former teammate over the past two seasons. Giacomini could be in line to work as an understudy behind tackles Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton. Both players are now in their thirties and could hang up the cleats at any time.

The draft ended for Green Bay in the seventh round with two selections. They traded away their third seventh round pick to the New Orleans Saints for a 2009 sixth round selection. LSU quarterback Matt Flynn and San Diego State wide receiver Brett Swain were the final two draft picks selected by G.M. Ted Thompson and Coach Mike McCarthy.

Favre Awarded For His Media Relations
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
April 26, 2008

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre was named the 2008 Pro Football Writers of America ‘Good Guy Award’ winner, the PFWA announced Friday.

Instituted in 2005, the award is “given to the player who best helped the media do its job.” Favre wins the award for his dealings with the media in a season which saw him lead the Packers to a 13-3 regular-season mark and surpass nearly every significant career passing milestone, including yards, touchdowns and wins.

In announcing the award, the PFWA noted, “Favre not only gave detailed, honest answers but increased his availability to national and out-of-town reporters. Leading into games, Favre did more conference calls than in previous seasons with media covering the opposition even knowing he would inevitably be asked the same questions about his possible retirement. Favre answered the inquiries with class and dignity before making his retirement official in March.”

Previous honoree’s of the PFWA Good Guy Award include Jerome Bettis (2005), Tiki Barber (2006) and LaDainian Tomlinson (2007).

Packers Place Favre On Retired List
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
April 26, 2008

The Green Bay Packers have placed quarterback Brett Favre on the NFL’s reserve/retired list, along with waiving three players, to reduce the number of players counting against the Green Bay active roster to 68 players on active status. The transactions were announced Friday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Released were offensive linemen Tony Palmer, Chris Patrick and Cliff Washburn.
The NFL’s all-time leader in every major career passing category, Favre announced his retirement from football at a March 6 press conference. However, since that date he had continued to count against the league’s 80-player roster limit.

“Today’s moves are procedural in nature,” said Thompson. “Both (head coach) Mike McCarthy and I have spoken to Brett over the past several days. Brett knew this change in his roster status was coming, and he fully understood our need to make the move in advance of the NFL Draft.

“The NFL does not require a letter for a player to be placed in a reserve/retired status. Brett has announced his retirement publicly and this is simply a personnel transaction made to develop a roster opportunity for the Packers.”

Palmer played in a pair of 2007 games before sustaining a season-ending neck injury in the Packers’ victory at the N.Y. Giants. Both Patrick and Washburn had stints on the Green Bay practice squad in ’07 before signing for the 2008 season this past January.
