A nationally televised contest and two trips west highlight the Green Bay Packers’ 2008 preseason schedule. The preliminary schedule was communicated by the National Football League on Thursday.

Date                   Opponent                                                                             Time
Mon., Aug. 11   CINCINNATI BENGALS Bishop’s Charities Game            7 p.m.
Week 2             at San Francisco 49ers                                                          TBA
Week 3             at Denver Broncos                                                                TBA
Week 4             TENNESSEE TITANS (Gold pkg.) Midwest Shrine Game   TBA

The Packers have designated the Monday Night Football preseason opener against the Bengals as the 48th annual Bishop’s Charities Game, a charitable contest initiated in 1961 by Vince Lombardi and the Diocese of Green Bay that has raised more than $3.4 million. Green Bay and Cincinnati last met in the preseason in 2006, also a Monday night contest.

In the second weekend of NFL preseason action, Green Bay will travel west to take on the 49ers in San Francisco. The two clubs have not met in the preseason since 1975. The Packers then travel to Denver to face the Broncos in the third preseason contest. Green Bay and Denver last met in preseason action in 2001.

The Packers and Titans will close out the preseason at Lambeau Field in the 59th annual Upper Midwest Shrine Game. The tradition, which began in 1950, has raised more than $3.1 million for the Midwest Shrine’s burn centers and hospitals for crippled children. Green Bay has won four in a row, and eight of its last nine, in the Shrine series. The two clubs will meet in the preseason finale for a seventh consecutive year, as the league allows teams to determine one of their preseason opponents.

Other than the Cincinnati contest, exact dates and times for the Packers’ other three preseason games are to be determined.

The league is expected to release the remainder of the regular-season schedule later this month.
The Packers will kick off the 2008 regular season at Lambeau Field in a Monday Night Football contest against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8, the 95th installment in the border rivalry. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

Brewers Take 2 Game Lead Over Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers have stormed out of the gates with two quick wins over the Chicago Cubs. The Sports Page last night on 96.7 FM was dedicated to the MLB season opener and the Brewers. Joe Witt from Witt Peninsula Ford joined for the broadcast and we talked about why the Brewers are in position to win the N.L. Central Division this year. Rickie Weeks batting leadoff has already proven to be deadly. He belted a solo homerun on the first pitch of the game to start the Brewers complete domination of inter-division rival.
Witt believes the game that the Brewers are playing with outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. is ridiculous. After an amazing opening day at Wriggly Field, Gwynn was sent back to the bench. His replacement is the much older Gabe Kapler. The Brewers sent Kapler to center field because of the more favorable right handed swinging, left handed pitching Ted Lilly.
The Brewers will play their home opener tomorrow against the San Francisco Giants. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. tomorrow in Milwaukee.

Packers Receive Compensatory Draft Choice
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com

, 2008

The Green Bay Packers received an additional draft choice in  the third round of the 2008 NFL draft yesterday. A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2008 NFL Draft have been awarded to 15 teams, the NFL announced this week.
Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced this week will supplement the 220 choices in the seven rounds of the 2008 NFL Draft (April 26-27). This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
One club this year (St. Louis) will receive a compensatory pick even though it did not suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents. Under the formula, the compensatory free agents St. Louis lost were ranked higher than the ones it signed (by a specified point differential based upon salary and performance).

Head baseball coach Jay Kita and assistant Brett Anschutz of the Gibraltar Viking baseball team, were the guests on the "Sports Page" Monday night from the C & C Supper Club in Fish Creek. Coach Kita, a '89 graduate of Gibraltar High School, is in his 4th season as head coach and is looking forward to a strong '08 campaign. 22 players are out for baseball this season with tough competition for all positions.
Versatility and flexibility are the make up of the team this year, with many players expected to play multiple positions. Sophomore Tom Sawyer will return as the catcher behind the plate, but all other position players are still to be determined. Coach Anschutz is working with the pitchers and has eleven arms, including three lefties, to throw at opposing teams.
Expectations are high for the Vikings as they would like to better the Regional final they participated in last year. The four seniors on the team have set a goal of getting to state for the first time since 1988. Gibraltar opens it's season Thursday at Southern Door.
