Sturgeon Bay Clipper baseball coach Matt Propsom and his team will be leading the 2008 Clipper baseball and softball clinic. This year's camp will be Saturday, April 5th. Boys and girls in grades 4 - 8 will learn about baseball and softball from former college pitcher Matt Propsom and his Clipper baseball team. The boys’ clinic will be from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The girls’ clinic starts at 1:00 pm and concludes at 3:00 pm. Coach Propsom talked about what sets his camp apart from the rest.

The registration deadline for the 2008 Clipper baseball and Softball clinics is Friday, March 28th. This year players will meet in the Sturgeon Bay High School gymnasium. Propsom asks that all youngsters arrive 10-15 minutes early.
All participants will receive individual and group instruction on the proper mechanics of hitting, including stance and proper bat path. Students will learn and participate in many hitting drills that help develop the proper swing. Besides drills, all participants will have an opportunity to hit off live pitching. Propsom knows students at this clinic will walk away a better player.

Clinic participants should bring tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. If participants have a bat and batting glove, they should bring them, however, bats will be available at the clinic. Matt Propsom, Varsity Baseball Coach at Sturgeon Bay High School, John Berns, Assistant Varsity Coach, Scott Steebs, Junior Varsity Coach, along with the Sturgeon Bay High School baseball players, will be on hand to teach and demonstrate proper hitting mechanics for this April 5 clinic.

Pfannenstiel Did It All During Athletic Career

Sturgeon Bay resident Mike Pfannenstiel joined me last night on the Sports Page on 96.7 FM WBDK to share his collegiate baseball and golf story with me. We broadcast every Wednesday from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Pfannenstiel played high school football in Hawaii before transferring to Tennessee. The multi-sport athlete was fortunate enough to receive a baseball scholarship to a private college. Things did not pan out for Mike during his first college experience. Therefore, he transferred to the University of Memphis and walked on to the golf team where he worked his way to an all-conference selection in the Big East Conference as a junior.
Now, Mike Pfannenstiel works as on the sales team at the radio stations of DoorCountyDailyNews.com. He will be my color commentator for the 2008-2009 season with the Sturgeon Bay Clippers. The Sports Page is broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK from the Ladder House.

Sturgeon Bay graduate and AFL quarterback with the Georgia Force Chris Greisen, has been named Offensive Player of the week for Week 3 of the 2008 season. The 6'3" Greisen completed 26-of-41 passes for 366 yards and seven touchdowns as the Force (1-2) defeated the Los Angeles Avengers (2-1), 58-34, at The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Saturday. Greisen led Georgia’s offense on eight consecutive scoring drives and nine of the teams 10 total possessions. Greisen distributed his season-high seven touchdown strikes to four different receivers, as the Force posted a season-high 389 yards of total offense. Georgia travels to Orlando to face the Predators (1-2) on Saturday, at 8:30 p.m. in a Southern Division match up.
The Force lost major offensive fire power in the off season. The wide receiver position is filled with new names and faces. Chris Greisen was in the running for AFL MVP last year, and his week 3 performance has him back on track.

Wisconsin And Marquette Are Doomed In NCAA Tournament
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com

If you are looking to win your office NCAA bracket pool, do not pick with your heart (ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR). The Wisconsin Badgers and Marquette Golden Eagles will not take us on the ride some may be expecting. The Badgers do not have a consistent big time scorer to rescue them against the run and gun teams of the PAC-10 and ACC. If defense truly wins championships, the Badgers would have won a National title under Dick Bennett. This year's Badgers squad has the best offensive balance Madison has seen in over a decade.

However, balance is not everything. When selecting your NCAA brackets pick teams with two three and even four potential NBA difference makers. Those teams are UCLA, UNC, Georgetown and Kansas. I believe the UCLA Bruins are best equipped to handle any style of play and will move on to a national championship.

The Badgers got the shaft with the number three seed, but snuck into a relatively light regional. The Midwest has two teams that have a legitimate chance of winning the national championship, Kansas and Georgetown. Not the Badgers.

I played little league baseball with Wisconsin center Brian Butch and have a routing interest. He was a great athlete then and is still ripping it up today, but I just don’t think there is enough around him to lift the Badgers to the Elite Eight.

Marquette is excessively inconsistent. Junior point guard Dominic James has proved one thing this season. It was the right decision to avoid the NBA draft last year and he should do the same again after this season. I would not be surprised to see the Golden Eagles go down in the first round against Kentucky. If they do escape their first round match up, it's lights out for them against Stanford.

Wisconsin and Marquette basketball fans don't buy into the hype Paul Schmitt will try to sell you. He is a salesman by profession, so I could understand if you do. Take it from the sports reporter, Wisconsin will be knocked out in the sweet 16 and Marquette falls early.

Wisconsin Teams Will Fare Well In Tourney
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com

The Wisconsin Badgers will get to the final four and the Marquette Golden Eagles will make it to the sweet sixteen. That's my prediction as "March Madness" sweeps the nation. First, Marquette. The Golden Eagles might be the anti-badgers. They have wonderfully skilled athletes who love to run up and down the court. The frantic pace fits Marquette's coach Tom Crean's personality and approach. It's fun to watch, but unfortunately the sixth seeded Golden Eagles do not have the inside game to grind out victories deep into the tournament. Look for Marquette to upend Kentucky and slip past Stanford, before getting run out of gym by the Texas Longhorns.

Now the Badgers, Bo Ryan has brought a complete team concept to Madison, reminiscent of the Dick Bennett years. In fact, it was eight years ago when the Badgers, as an eighth seed, shocked the basketball world by making it to the final four. Wisconsin will play down and up to any level of competition, which is dangerous, but they always seems to find a way to win. That's a team that will go deep into the NCAA tournament. With six players averaging between 7.5 and 12.5 points per game, the Badgers have too many options for any team to shut down.

Maybe when they run into UCLA or North Carolina, the talent might be too good to overcome. But until then, look for Wisconsin to dominate Cal State-Fullerton, comeback and defeat a fast-paced USC team, out-muscle the Georgetown Hoyas, and then dismantle the surprising Vanderbilt Commodores in the Regional final. After a hard-fought defeat against North Carolina in the final four, the Badgers will finish 33-5, and that folks is a great season by anyone's account.

Side note: UCLA will beat Texas in the semi-finals before defeating North Carolina 87-82 in the finals. Get your brackets filled-in and let the madness begin!

UWGB recruit Sam Zastrow was named as one of the best basketball players in the state. The Algoma girl's basketball team had an amazing season, ending in the sectional semi-finals with a loss to North Fon du Lac. The Wolves won a Packerland Conference and regional Championship, as well. Junior point guard Sam Zastrow was the glue that kept the team together. She was named this week to the honorable mention all state team.
Zastrow was named Packerland Conference player of the year and was 1 point away from tying teammate Kiah Simon for the scoring title. Sam blew out the competition in terms of assists. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and play on the women's basketball team under head coach Matt Bolant.

The guest on WSBW's "Sports Page" Monday night was head coach of the Sevastopol Pioneer girls softball team Tim Newton.  Newton is in his first season as head coach of the program but has been assistant coach for the past eight years.  He revisited last year's Division III Championship season, which saw the Pioneers upset previously undefeated Grantsburg and Arcadia at the state tournament in Madison, 4-0 and 4-2 respectively.  Newton said he looks for the three returning seniors, Carissa Neinas, Lacey Weber and Allison Junion to lead this year's squad, with juniors Brittany Jilot and Cathy Kaye expected to make big contributions again.  With twenty-two girls out for softball this year, Coach Newton said he sees opportunities and potential with the  up and coming sophomores and freshmen.  Sevastopol is scheduled to open the season Monday, March 31, weather permitting.

The Packerland Conference Boy's basketball season was full of surprises. The post season awards involved more of the same. In a rare split vote for player of the year, Oconto teammates Charlie Olson and Antowan Epps were named the Packerland's best. Olson and Epps averaged approximately 15 points per game, which is in the top four in the conference in scoring.

Also on the first team was Kewaunee senior Alex Delebreau, Algoma's Craig Harmann, Kyle Fehl of Sevastopol and Southern Door senior Michael Blizel.

Second team awards went to Algoma back court mates Eric Ackerman and Craig Kirchman, Southern Door's Jared Spude, Ethan Derricks of NEW Lutheran, Oconto's Logan Ellmann Jr. and Tyler Thompson from Kewaunee.

The list of honorable mention players included Gibraltar teammates Kelly Smethurst, Sam Forkert, and Devin Thomas, Sturgeon Bay's Simon Rabas, Mark LaTour of Kewaunee; Algoma's Brett Bekmann, Derrick Bordeleau of NEW Lutheran, Southern Door's Derek Tassoul and Cam Fuller of Sevastopol.
