performance wasn’t enough to topple the Oriels 2-3 zone defense.
Post player Kiah Simon was silenced with seven points. The loss
leaves the Wolves with an overall record of (22-2).
The North Fon du Lac win sets up a sectional final game between the
Oriels and Amherst. They will square off tomorrow at Ashwaubenon at

L-C Falls Short
To Freedom
By Mark Kanz DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 7,
2008Trailing by a hoop at
halftime, the Luxemburg Casco girls basketball team ran into a buzz
saw in the second half as Freedom ran away with a 45-31 win in a
Sectional semi-final match up at Seymour Thursday night. The Irish
defense held LC to just five points in the third quarter and put an
end to the
Spartans' Cinderella season. With just two seniors on the roster,
the future looks bright for the Spartans.
The experienced Freedom team claimed its third straight win over Bay
Conference opponents having knocked off Seymour and Oconto Falls en
route to the showdown with the Spartans. LC struggled from the free
throw line connecting on just over half of its attempts. The
Spartans also committed an uncharacteristically higher number of
turnovers in the defeat.
LC was led in scoring by Senior Katlin LeGrave with 8, while
Freshman Kelsey Joniaux chipped in 6. Freedom's balanced attack was
led by Stacie Van Handel with 11 and Kristin Verhagen with 10.
Lux Casco closes the season with a 14-9 record. Freedom (22-2)
advances to Saturday's sectional final against Eastern Valley
Conference foe Fox Valley Lutheran. The Foxes surprised the top
ranked team in the state Ripon 63-61 in Thursday's other semi-final.
Freedom beat FVL in both conference meetings this
season, including a 27 point win at Appleton five weeks ago. |

All Good
Things Must Come To An End - Favre Retires
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 6,
2008An emotional
Brett Favre addressed the media today at a press conference at
the Lambeau Field Atrium. The entire Packers nation turned on
their radio, television or set their tape recorder to catch one
last glimpse of Favre in front of a Green Bay backdrop.
Brett choked back tears as he started to give a
statement from the heart. Before entering the formal
announcement of his retirement Brett promised himself, he
wouldn't cry. That is one promise he could not keep.
(Audio
Here)
Favre explained to reporters why this was the right
time to walk away but emotions boiled over a number of times. He
explained that he is no longer up to the challenge.
The gunslinger walks away as the most exciting and productive
signal callers in pro football annals, Favre completes his
17-year career as the NFL’s all-time leader in every significant
career passing category – touchdowns (442), completions (5,377),
attempts (8,758) and yards (61,555), plus wins (160).
“He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the
National Football League,” said General Manager Ted Thompson.
“He is able to walk away from the game on his own terms – not
many players are able to do that. The Packers owe him a
tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given Packers fans 16 years
of wonderful memories, a Super Bowl championship among them,
that will live on forever.
“Brett’s many accomplishments on the field are legendary. He
leaves the game holding virtually every career passing record,
plus his consecutive starts streak, which may never be
duplicated. The uniqueness of Brett Favre – his personality,
charisma and love of the game – undoubtedly will leave him as
one of the enduring figures in NFL history.”
A certain first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre will be celebrated
for his legendary durability even more than his prodigious
numbers. His 253 consecutive starts (275 including playoffs) is
the NFL record for quarterbacks and the second-longest recorded
streak in league history. With 10 quarterbacks making their
initial NFL start in 2007, a total of 212 signal callers opened
a game since Favre began his starting streak Sept. 27, 1992.
The league’s only three-time MVP, Favre led the Packers to 11
playoff appearances, including seven division crowns, four NFC
Championship Games, two Super Bowls and a World Championship
with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.
In addition to breaking records for career touchdown passes at
Minnesota, passing yardage at St. Louis and wins at New York in
2007, Favre extended a handful of other all-time marks this past
season, including seasons with at least 300 completions (16) and
3,000 yards passing (16), and TD passes in a single stadium (209
at Lambeau Field). He finishes his career as the NFL’s most
accurate passer among those with at least 6,000 career attempts,
his 61.4 career completion percentage placing him ahead of No. 2
Dan Marino (59.4 percent). With 63 games with three-or-more
touchdown passes, Favre also placed just ahead of Marino (62) on
the NFL’s all-time list.
Favre consistently disdained talk of statistics throughout his
career, concerning himself most with his team’s victories. Since
taking over as the Packers’ starter in the fourth week of the
1992 season, he led Green Bay to a 160-93 regular-season record,
tops in the NFL over that period.
His legacy is cemented as one of the most beloved players of his
generation. Favre’s hard-working approach and down-to-earth
attitude appealed to football fans across the nation, once again
topping the Harris Poll in 2007 as the nation’s favorite
football player. The Southern Mississippi product also topped
the list in 2003, ’04 and ’06, placing second to the Colts’
Peyton Manning in ’05.
Favre will long be remembered for as much as he did away from
the football field as his inspiring play on it. Founded in 1996,
the ‘Brett Favre Fourward Foundation’ aims to provide aid to
disadvantaged or disabled children residing in Mississippi and
Wisconsin. In conjunction with his annual golf tournament,
celebrity softball game and fundraising dinners, the foundation
has donated more than $3 million to charities in the two states.
In 2005, the charity raised approximately $1 million in support
of Hurricane Katrina relief to be used in Mississippi’s three
Gulf Coast counties.
Additionally, he was honored in 2007 by the Make-A-Wish
Foundation with the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award in
recognition of the nearly 65 wishes he granted since joining the
Packers.
A native of Kiln, Miss., Favre finishes his 16-year career with
the Packers with 30 team records. |

What
They’re Saying About Brett Favre
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 6,
2008Packers President/CEO
Mark Murphy
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Brett Favre and all that
he's done for the Packers and the NFL. He has authored one of pro
football's great careers. He's an exceptional competitor on the
field and a great figure for the community off the field, in
Wisconsin and Mississippi.
"Prior to coming to the Packers, I admired Brett Favre from afar and
enjoyed following his career through the years, like many football
fans. Once I arrived, all those thoughts were reinforced. He means
so much to everyone that supports the Packers. We've been fortunate
to have him as our quarterback.
"The Green Bay Packers are well positioned for the future. We have a
great young team that is going to continue to improve. The quality
of the football operations is in great shape. Our two key football
people, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy, are in place to continue
their great work.
"It's a bittersweet time as we celebrate one of the NFL's greatest
all-time players. We're happy for Brett and his family that he's
been able to come to this decision. We wish him well and look
forward to Brett being a part of the Packers' family for years to
come."
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
"Brett Favre will always be remembered as one of the greatest
players and fiercest competitors in NFL history. His long list of
accomplishments both on and off the field is remarkable. Brett's
talent, enthusiasm and love of the game helped him become the only
player to earn three MVP awards and he was a vital part of bringing
a Super Bowl championship back to Green Bay.
"It has been a joy and privilege for all of us to watch him play. We
wish Brett, Deanna and their family all the best and hope he will
stay connected to the game that he honored with his brilliant play
for so many years."
Former Packers GM Ron Wolf
"I think that's what made him the exception that he is as a player,
his ability to improvise. Everybody has copied his throwing style
now but that was a unique Brett Favre thing, just wing it, sometimes
underhand, sometimes behind the back, sometimes to a lineman, and a
few times to the opposition. But that's Brett Favre and he did those
types of things. I think he had a great deal of fun playing the game
and he always played to win the game and that's an important deal.
[He] had great, great respect for the game and a greater respect for
the people who played the game.
"I thought he was the best player in the draft in 1991 and you know
what? He was. It turned out he was. He's certainly a first ballot
Hall of Fame player. He's being compared now with the greats ever to
play the game in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and that puts him in very,
very unique company."
Former Green Bay head coach Mike Holmgren
"Brett's career accomplishments will be measured among the greats of
the game for the balance of time. He truly was as gifted a player as
I have ever seen, and as proud and amazed as I am of what Brett has
accomplished on the playing field. The thing that impresses me the
most is what kind of a man and leader he has become off the field
since I have known him. I have taken great joy in watching him
develop as a person and father - perhaps even more so - than as a
coach watching his quarterback."
NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci, Favre's former QB coach in Green
Bay
"Throughout his 17 years, he never lost that feeling of playing the
game for the first time. That's what makes Brett Favre unlike any
other player I have ever seen. It doesn't matter whether you're a
Packers fan or a football fan, for that matter -- sports fans in
general have appreciated watching Brett compete for 17 years and can
only smile when reflecting on what he brought to the game. Brett's
enthusiasm and pure enjoyment of doing what he loved is what we will
all remember.
"It was never for the money or for the records for Brett. He played
for his love of competition and wanted to be the best player for his
team."
Former teammate and current Houston Texans RB Ahman Green
"I think back to my first year in Green Bay, it was a Monday Night
game, Brett threw the ball to Antonio Freeman, who made the crazy
catch in overtime. Before that Brett just kept everyone pumped up
and reminded us that we had to make a play. He threw me one of his
famous underhanded passes that game for a touchdown to keep us in
the game. Stuff like that made him special.
"My fondest memory was the game after his dad passed away on Monday
Night against the Raiders. Everyone really pulled together in terms
of moral support for him. He had a tragic loss and we knew what one
person could go through and the range of feelings when you lose a
family member. We just rallied behind him. He tried to talk the
night before and he really couldn't say much but we knew where he
was coming from. From that point on we knew what we had to do as a
team. He knew we were going to go out and give it everything thing
we had for him."
Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski
"The number one trait that Brett Favre had was anticipation, and I
think it's key to any successful quarterback, but as I watched Brett
through 17 years of playing this game, the ball went out of his
hands quickly. He knew where to go with the football before the
receivers would make their break. ... The great anticipation and
understanding of that West Coast offense really was the key to his
consistent success."
NFL Films president Steve Sabol
"Although his passing records are remarkable, his lasting monument,
and it towers above all else, is his toughness. He was the last of
the old-fashioned quarterbacks who refused to be mechanized by
systems and endless scouting reports. He would try the unthinkable,
the uncoachable and often pull it off."
Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan
"Brett Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of
professional football. You're judged by winning, and he's won more
games than any other quarterback who has ever played. But I will
remember him just as well for being such a fierce competitor and an
outstanding leader. He was the face of the Packers and a great
credit to our game. It was an honor to coach against him."
Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young
"What I remember about Brett Favre most is his ability to put the
ball in the end zone throwing touchdown passes. I myself learned a
lot through the '90s of his ability to take a receiver that's not
even open and putting the ball in a spot where that guy can catch
the football, and, instead of kicking field goals, Brett Favre was
throwing touchdowns when most weren't."
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY
“Brett Favre has been one of the special players of this generation.
His competitiveness was second to none, and he was at his best in
the big games. But, no matter how big the game was, he always had
fun on the field. I wish him and his family the best and extend my
congratulations on a great career. The NFL certainly will miss him.”
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS QUARTERBACK PEYTON MANNING
“While the NFL loses one of its greatest players, I join football
fans everywhere in saluting Brett Favre. Brett was one of the game’s
unique players, and we all were fortunate to witness his remarkable
17-season career. Brett’s competitive nature, his passion for the
game and his ability to create plays led to outstanding
accomplishments that were defined far beyond the statistical records
he set. Brett’s career equated into championships for Green Bay.
“He was the face of the Packers during his career, and he takes his
rightful place among the all-time greats to play the game.
Personally, I have appreciated how Brett has felt about my family
and how he followed my father’s career. Entering the NFL as he was
in the middle of his career, I got to know Brett in a way that will
be special to me always. It was an honor to share the field with
him, and I hope the coming years offer continued blessings for Brett
and his family.” |

Favre Says
Good Bye To Football
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 4,
2008The state of
Wisconsin is in a state of shock today. The announcement that Brett
Favre is retiring took many by surprise. The quarterback informed
the organization of his intention to retire from the Green Bay
Packers and the NFL. He has had one of the greatest careers in the
history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away
from the game on his own terms - not many players are able to do
that.
The Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. He has given

Packer fans in Door and Kewaunee Counties could hardly believe the
news. Sturgeon Bay resident Andy Boettcher said when he heard the
announcement that pretty much ended his workday.

Tim Fameree lives in Luxemburg. He is happy that Favre went out with
a great year but he was still shocked.

Ski, Fuzzy,

March 4,

Monday night in Fish Creek, Greg "Fuzzy" Sunstrom of Sister Bay was
the special guest. Sunstrom participated in the 100 mile Canadian
Ski Marathon last month in Canada. The two day event started at 6am
in the morning with 10 mile checkpoints along the trail. Although it
was not a race, participants were required to meet a time deadline
each day. Sunstrom who admitted pushed himself a little too much the
first day, was able to complete the course with eight minutes to
spare on the second day. Fuzzy an American Birkebeiner competitor
for the last 14 years, is known for his special "blue jeans" attire.
In the future, he looks to possibly complete in the world's longest
running cross-country skiing event, the "Vasaloppet", a 54 mile

Algoma & L-C
Girls Advance
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 3,
2008
The Algoma girl’s basketball team played in the regional final
for the first time since 1986-1987 on Saturday and topped
Brillion 52-31. The Wrightstown field house was filled with
Algoma supporters. Brillion was unable to stay with the Wolves
potent offensive attack.
A scary moment happened late in the second quarter when point
guard Sam Zastrow crossed half court and then broke into tears
while nursing her left foot. The injury took Zastrow out of her
shooting rhythm but not out of the game. She came back in the
second quarter and created numerous open looks for teammates.
A 21-point effort by Kiah Simon was enough to silence the
Brillion crowd. Lyndsay Swoboda finished with 5, Ashley Stangel
scored 7 Kayla Parkos chipped in 5 and Zastrow finished with 14.
The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan
girls outscored Two Rivers 18-0 in the third quarter and cruised
to a 38-17 regional final victory in Kimberly Saturday in
Division 2 Girls Basketball tournament action. L-C held Two
Rivers to a single field goal in the second half Using a
suffocating half-court defense and full-court pressure to
continually frustrate the Purple Raiders. The Spartans were led
in scoring by Kaitlyn LeGrave and Kim Mleziva with Nine points
each. Two Rivers were led by Becca Diedtrich with six points.
L-C will now travel to Seymour Thursday night to take on the the
Freedom Irish in the Sectional semi-finals. The game will be

L-C Cannot
Overcome Early Deficit At State
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
March 3,
2008
The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team had one goal on Saturday and
that was to win a state championship. For the second year in a
row, Ellsworth stood in the way and squashed the team’s chances.
In the WIAA Division 2 state semi-final in Madison, L-C fell
33-28 to last year’s state champs Ellsworth.
The dual began on a strong note with a major decision for L-C
junior Trevor Spude at 215 pounds. Justin Mudlaff, Alex LeRoy,
Zac Cibula, Chris Kipp, Ryan Zellner and Nick Lloyd also
registered wins. But it wasn’t enough and the Spartans fell
short of their team goal of a state championship. |

L-C Stuns
Southern Door In Brussels
By Mark Kanz DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 29,
2008
Ball-hawking defense and solid outside shooting has lifted the
3rd seeded Luxemburg Casco Spartans into the regional title game
of the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament. L-C surprised 2nd seed
Southern Door Thursday night, 53-39 on the Eagles home court.
The Spartans extended a four point, first quarter lead to a
dozen by halftime and never looked back. L-C drained six-three
pointers including a pair by Senior Kim Mleziva who led the
Spartans in scoring with 12. Fellow Senior Katlin LeGrave also
contributed a dozen, while her sister April and Kalli Schmelzer
each dropped in eight.
Southern Door, which had lost only one game previously, was led
in scoring by Alyssa Sekadlo and Bridget Baudhuin with 10 points
apiece. The Eagles close the season at 20-2, while the Spartans
mark is now 13-8. L-C will travel to Kimberly Saturday at 4 p.m.
to face top seeded Two Rivers. The winner moves on to the

The Algoma girl's basketball team was in complete control
throughout the WIAA Division 3 regional semi-final against
Kewaunee last night. The game was played in Algoma on 102.1 FM
WRKU. Pressure defense and an up-tempo offense led the Wolves to
a dominating 57-26 win over their cross county rivals. Kiah
Simon had a strong start in the paint for Algoma and finished
with 17 points. Sam Zastrow led the Wolves with 18, but it was
the remarkable job she did creating for other teammates that
stole the show. Scooping, twirling and highlight reel worthy
passes wowed the near capacity crowd.
Kewaunee had numerous turnovers and could not handle the in your
face defense played by Algoma. They were led by Kari Wotachek
with 11 points. The visitors had a great season with a third
place finish in the Packerland Conference (9-5).
Algoma will travel to Wrightstown tomorrow to play the third
seeded Brillion team at 1:30 p.m. 102.1 FM WRKU will begin
pre-game coverage at 1:00 p.m. The Wolves will have to try to
shut down a tall team with an average height of 5' 8". |
