Kyle Trelka
Excited To Continue Swimming Career
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 28,
2008
Sturgeon
Bay senior Kyle Trelka and Clipper swim coach Cap Wulf joined me
last night on the Sports Page on 96.7 FM. The team finished
fifth in the state at the WIAA Division 2
state competition earlier this month. Kyle claimed two state championships
in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Trelka is undecided on a college and the senior is still
contemplating his options. He would like to swim but knows he
will be attending college for an education. Trelka is leaning
towards studying to become a fisheries and wildlife specialist.
Coach Wulf said he was extremely proud of Kyle's senior season
and the great job the entire did throughout the year.

Gibraltar
Pressed Out Of Playoffs
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com

The Gibraltar Viking girls lost to the Marion Mustangs 46-39 in
the Division 4 regionals at Marion Fieldhouse Tuesday night.
Marion led after one quarter 14-7 and as much as eleven points
in the second quarter before Gibraltar rallied to tie it 25-25
at halftime. The Third quarter was a see-saw affair of numerous
lead changes with Marion taking a 35-33 lead into the fourth
quarter. A suffocating full-court press forced some key
turnovers and Marion was able to hit five of eight free throws
down the stretch to gain the victory. The Mustangs balanced
attack included nine girls in the scoring column. Gibraltar
(7-14)was led by senior Molly Dickson who finished with 24
points, sixteen of those coming in the first half.

Eagles
Win Thriller In Algoma
For Share Of Conference Title
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 23,
2008
The best game I have ever seen in Packerland Conference girl's
basketball took place in Algoma last night. An overtime thriller
featured two players accounting for 67 of the 104 points scored
in the game. Southern Door was playing for a share of the
conference title and had previously lost to the Wolves early in
the season. Algoma was a perfect (19-0) on the season and (13-0)
in conference play. However, Southern Door earned a share of the
title with a 53-51 win.
A lightning fast first half ended with a 32-31 Southern Door
lead. At the half, Southern Door guard Alyssa Sekadlo had 24
points and Algoma junior Sam Zastrow had 21. The first two
quarters were completely dominated by the two players and it
appeared at some points that they were the only two that were
playing on the offensive end of the floor. Like an intense game
of H-O-R-S-E, Zastrow and Sekadlo traded baskets every time down
the floor.
The second half slowed considerably. The Eagles went to a 2-3
zone that worked well against the Algoma pass and cut offense.
The Wolves led by as many as six points in the final quarter
before a 44-44 tie with 5:41 remaining in the game. It was a
back and forth affair after that point.
At the end of regulation, Sam Zastrow held the ball for over one
minute and worked for the last shot. The score was tied at 51.
Moving right to left across the free throw line, Zastrow threw
up a floater falling towards the Algoma bench that rimmed out as
time expired.
A four minute overtime period followed. Two points were scored,
and both came from Kailyn Thayse at the free-throw line. Wolves
head coach Mark Zastrow called timeout with eight seconds
remaining. Zastrow would get another shot, this time to send the
game to a second overtime. Sam took the exact same shot, except
five feet closer to the hoop. The ball bounced off the
backboard, then the rim and out as time expired. The conference
finale ended 53-51. Southern Door students stormed the court to
celebrate a share of the Packerland Conference championship.
Sam Zastrow finished with 34 points. Sekadlo led the Eagles with
33. The two junior student athletes put on a show unlike
anything I have ever seen in high school sports. Each player
took their team on their back in the most intense atmosphere
known to high school athletics. Well over 900 people packed into
the tiny gymnasium in Algoma.
Coaches, players and fans will remember the 2008 Packerland
Conference championship game for years and years to come.
If you would like to listen back to the broadcast, click on the
Podcast link in the left hand column for local sports. Then
select Southern Door or Algoma and the link for the game. The
broadcast will take a few minutes to download if you have
high-speed internet. If you are a dial-up customer, the file
could take a considerable amount of time to capture.

Schanhofer Wins 500th Game
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 23,
2008
Sturgeon Bay girl's basketball coach Mike Schanhofer won his
500th game last night with a 45-35 win over NEW Lutheran. The
win lifts the Clippers to .500 on the season. A mark many
thought impossible in the beginning of the year. The team showed
significant improvement under Schanhofer throughout the season.
Senior Sarah McCauley scored 16 points, Lauren Rose added nine
and Sarraea Schmelzer scored seven.
Gibraltar ended their season on a double-overtime winning high
note. Molly Dickson scored a game-high 33 points in the 63-57
win over Oconto.
Kewaunee was the third team in the conference that won in
overtime 47-45 over Sevastopol. Kari Wotachek led Kewaunee with
16 points. The game is a preview of the regional quarterfinal
match up on Tuesday. The two teams will meet again in Kewaunee
next week. Cathy Kaye scored 23 points for Sevastopol.
Luxemburg-Casco captured an impressive 55-40 win over Marinette
in Bay Conference girl's hoops. The LeGrave sisters led the
Spartans again. Katlin and April scored 10 points apiece and
played stout defense as well. Kim Mleziva and Sammi Sisel each
added eight points for L-C.
