If the state individual wrestling tournament is any precursor for team state, Luxemburg-Casco is in great shape to win it all in division 2. The Spartan wrestling team placed all six of its state qualifiers into the finals after a full day of wrestling at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Division 2 semifinals provided an electric atmosphere and L-C winners ranging in age from freshman to senior. Freshman Justin Mudlaff advanced at 103, senior Adam Zehren at 119, senior Ryan Zellner at 171, senior and returning state champ Nick Lloyd at 189, junior Trever Spude at 215 and three-time state champion Zac Cibula 152 will wrestle in the finals today.

In a game heard on 105.1FM WSBW, the Marion Mustangs outlasted the Gibraltar Vikings 81-62 in a WIAA Division Four Boys Basketball Regional semi-final Thursday night. The game was much closer than the final score indicated, as Gibraltar actually lead by one point at halftime 29-28. The Mustangs came out in the second half using full-court press defense to force numerous Viking turnovers. Many of which were turned into easy transition baskets. Kris Betow scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter, including seven of eleven from the free throw line to seal the victory. Tom Sawyer led Gibraltar with 17 points while Sam Forkert added 16. Marion (12-10) now will play for the regional championship in Brillion on Saturday. Gibraltar (9-13) season comes to an end, but prospects look good for the future since only two seniors on the active roster will be graduating.

Eagles Soar To Regional Finals Tomorrow
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 22, 2008

The Packerland Conference stumbled last night in the regional semi-final round. Just one team remains. Southern Door crushed Wrightstown 60-30 in Brussels. Senior, Derik Hawkey scored a game high 27 points for the Eagles. A ten point first quarter lead would be enough to keep the Tigers down and out for the rest of the contest. Jarred Spude chipped in 12 points for Southern Door. They will play Valders at Manitowoc Lincoln at 1:30 P.M. Saturday.

Brillion had enough Popp in their game to slide past Sevastopol 71-44. Brillion's Andy Popp scored 30 points to lead all scorers in Brillion last night. The WIAA Division 3 playoff game was played at a lightning quick pace that Sevastopol could not match. Jimmy Heroux scored 15, Kyle Fehl added 10 and Cam Fuller scored 6 for the Pioneers.

Packers Put Franchise Tag On Williams, Release Franks
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 21, 2008

The Green Bay Packers have designated defensive tackle Corey Williams as their franchise player and released tight end Bubba Franks. The transactions were announced late Wednesday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.
As the Packers’ franchise player, Williams has a one-year contract tender offer at the defensive tackle franchise number set by the NFL. The Packers maintain a right of first refusal to match any team’s offer received by Williams.
Williams played in all 16 games, including nine starts, in 2007 and set career highs with 51 tackles and 32 solo stops. He tied his career high with seven sacks.
“Corey is a good young football player and has been a consistent performer for our team,” said Thompson.
Franks spent eight seasons with Green Bay and was one of the most productive tight ends in franchise history.

Franks played in 114 games for the Packers and made 94 starts. A first-round draft choice in 2000, he totaled 256 catches and 2,300 career receiving yards. His 32 touchdown receptions are tied for 10th on the franchise’s all-time list.
“We thank Bubba for everything he has given to our franchise,” said Thompson. “He was a productive player on the field, a good teammate in the locker room and a fine representative of the Packers in the Green Bay community.”

Schanhofer Sees Major Improvements In Clipper Girls
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 21, 2008

Sturgeon Bay first year girl's basketball coach Mike Schanhofer walked into a less than desirable coaching position. The senior class that graduated in 2007 saw a 1,000-point scorer in Sierra Spaude and great role players like Lauren McCormick, Mariah Asher and Jennifer Nesbitt. Schanhofer accepted the coaching position with high hopes for the future of the program. Many believed the young Clippers would be lucky to win a handful of games in the Packerland Conference.
Tomorrow night, the team will look to win their seventh game of the season in Green bay against NEW Lutheran. The win would lift the squad to .500 in conference play.
Coach Schanhofer joined me last night on the Sports Page on 96.7 FM WBDK. We broadcast every Wednesday from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Coach praised his team for the way hey adjusted to his coaching style. The team has shown marked improvement in leadership, overall play and hustle.
The Clippers received a tough draw in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday. They received an eight seed and will travel to number one seeded Two Rivers. Schanhofer said the team will have to play an excellent game to have a chance. He is thrilled to be coaching in Sturgeon Bay and knows he made the right choice in taking the position.
