Big Win
For Southern Door
By Karen Klement DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 15,
2008In a close Packerland
boys basketball match up yesterday, Southern Door beat Algoma 48-42.
The score remained pretty even throughout the game yesterday. The
Eagles were up one bucket at the end of the first quarter but the
Wolves answered back to take the lead 23-18 at the half. Things
slowed down for Algoma after that. Southern Door was able to step up
the offense and ended the third with a three point lead. Although
the Wolves scored 13 big
points in the fourth quarter, that was not enough for the win.
Southern Door's Derik Hawkey led the way in scoring for all players
with 21 points. Derek Tassoul added 11. For the Wolves, Eric
Aackerman and Craig Kirchman recorded 11 points each.
In Institute yesterday, Kewaunee defeated Sevastopol 74-44. Kewaunee
had a big first quarter with 18 points to Sevastopol's 3. While the
Pioneers stepped up the offense after that, it wasn't enough for a
win. Kewaunee's Tyler Thompson had a game high 21 points yesterday.
Jordan Ledvina added 13 and Alex Delebreau had 10. Jimmy Heroux and
Kyle Fehl led the way in scoring for Sevastopol with 11 points each.
Sturgeon Bay beat NEW Lutheran in the Clipper gym yesterday. The
final score was 45-37. Simon Rabas led the way in scoring for the
Clippers with 10 points. Matt Brauer added 8 and Tim Anderson had 7.
In a close Bay Conference boy's basketball game, Luxemburg-Casco
defeated Marinette 64-62. Jake Sinkula dropped in a big 27 point for
the Spartans. Jason Jandrin had 14 and Travis Tlachac added 11.

By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 12,
2008
Sectional semi-final wrestling
between Luxemburg-Casco and Freedom will be on the radio tonight.
Your home for Spartan athletics, 96.7 FM WBDK, will begin our

programs in the state. Spartans Head Coach Bob Berceau will join me
for the pre-match show to discuss the possible weight class matchups
against Freedom. The Irish were not expected to make it out of their
regional, which means they may be peaking at the right time.
The Spartans are looking for a return to the state championship
where they lost last year in the finals. Marty Nowak will join me on
the microphone tonight to bring you exciting high school wrestling.
If L-C beats the Irish in the semi-final, they will wrestle the

Escape Regional Wrestling Tourney, Barely
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 11,
2008
The top-ranked Division 2 wrestling
team, Luxemburg-Casco qualified for tomorrow's team sectional at
Freedom after a narrow 263-255 win over Wrightstown. 96.7 Fm WBDK
will broadcast the team sectional tomorrow with our pre-match
coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m. The regional has been called the
real state championship by many because of the talent pool. The
event was held on Saturday at the Southern Door High School
Gymnasium.
The addition of Wrightstown to the sectional last year made things
interesting. They bumped up one division after claiming the state
championship in Division 3 in 2006. L-C is undefeated in the
regional since 1985.
The Spartans held a single digit lead after the first round. The
Tigers leaped in front by a single point after round two and had one
more wrestler in the championship round. The deck was stacked
against L-C but came through with seven individual champions. The
advantage was gained when the Bay Conference team won four of five
head-to-head matches against Wrightstown in the championship round.
Wrightstown won four. Justin Mudlaff at 103, Adam Zehren at 119,
Alex LeRoy at 145 Zac Cibula at 152, Ryan Zellner at 171 and Trevor
Spude at 215 won individual regional titles for Luxemburg-Casco.
Denmark finished in third place followed by Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol,
Southern Door, West De Pere and Two Rivers. At 135, Sturgeon
Bay/Sevastopol's Noah Salmeri qualified for sectionals. Teamate
Jordan Olson advanced at 152 pounds. Eric Lardinois from Southern
Door also qualified at 145.
Wrightstown and L-C each qualified 10 wrestlers for Saturday's
individual sectional at West De Pere. That made it difficult for
other schools with just eight spots remaining.
Wrightstown's regional champs were junior Brandon Mueller at 112,
Zach Corlett at 119, Ryan Renon at 160, and Zac Morrison at 285.
History lesson: Last year L-C beat Wrightstown 26-23 in the team
sectional final.

Eagles Earn
Championship, Wolves Roll Clippers
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 9,
2008
Kewaunee and Southern Door fought
until the very end for a chance at the Packerland Conference
championship in boy's basketball last night. Tied up deep into the
fourth quarter a five-point possession for the Eagles was the dagger
that put Kewaunee away for good. Derik Hawkey led Southern Door with
a game high 27 points. Kewaunee once again showed their balance on
offense with five players scoring eight or more points. They were
led by Tyler Thompson with 14.
The win moved the Eagles to (12-1) and closed the conference title
race. Kewaunee fell to (10-3) in the conference.
Algoma rumbled past Sturgeon Bay 53-38. The Clippers continued to
struggle and allowed Eric Ackerman to score a game-high 19 points
for the Wolves. Craig Harmann scored 13 and Craig Kirchman dished
out 12 assists for Algoma. The Clippers were led by Tim Anderson for
the first time this season. He scored 10 points.
Oconto regained some momentum with a 63-44 win over Sevastopol. Kyle
Fehl led the Pioneers with 24 points. The Blue Devils got a lift
from behind the arc. Charlie Olson made six 3-point shots and scored
21 points.
Gibraltar earned an impressive victory over NEW Lutheran 57-51.
Kelly Smetherst posted a double-double with 15 points and 11
rebounds for the Vikings. Alex Larsen poured in 12 points.

Spartan
Girls Hold On
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
February 9,
2008
The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans
continued an impassive and surprising season by topping Denmark last
night in Bay Conference girl's hoops. The Vikings had a shot as time
expired but came up just short. The Spartans barely held on to a
41-39 win. Coach Brett Killion got most of his young team involved
and ten players scored for the Spartans. Senior Katlin LeGrave led
the scoring attack with 10 points. Stephanie Nemetz led Denmark with
14.
