Last night Coach Delcore dissected his teams (13-1) start. Led by three seniors and extraordinary junior class the squad is hosting Gibraltar tonight. The coach also talked about their playing days. Delcore played for Luxemburg-Casco in the 1980’s and led his squad as a two guard in basketball and second baseman in baseball. Coach Wautier was a four-year three-sport athlete at Southern Door. She said it is like deja vu with the girls battling with Algoma for the conference championship. It happened with her varsity teams in high school too. Packer's
Clifton Headed to Hawaii By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com January 24, 2008 Green Bay Packers tackle Chad Clifton has been added to the NFC Pro Bowl roster, the league announced yesterday. Clifton replaces Seahawks tackle Walter Jones on the squad. A 6-foot-5, 320-pound player in his eighth season with the Packers, Clifton earns his first career trip to the Pro Bowl. He was recognized as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2004 and ’05. The Tennessee product started all 16 games at left tackle for the Packers in 2007 and has started 79 of 80 games since returning from a pelvic injury that ended his 2002 season. Clifton will join teammates Brett Favre, Donald Driver, Aaron Kampman and Al Harris at the Pro Bowl, to be played on Feb. 10 at Aloha Stadium. Coach McCarthy said Favre has yet to decide if he will be playing in the Pro Bowl game. He has turned down the last four opportunities presented to him to play in the game. |

Season Could Be Record Breaking For Favre By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com January 22, 2008 The Packers playoff run ended with a dismal performance against the Giants Sunday. The bitter cold seemed to affect the Packers more than the visitors. The loss marked the end of Brett Favre's 17th NFL season. The monumental regular season records set by Favre will forever place him amongst the all-time greats. The quarterback did not set any post season league records but is closing in on Joe Montana for Touchdown passes, passing yards and completions. Packers Dream
Season Ends In NFC Championship Loss By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com January 21, 2008 The dream season for the Green Bay Packers ended last night in Ice Bowl II. New York stunned the football world with a 23-20 win on the foot of kicker Lawrence Tynes. His final two attempts during regulation missed wide left and sent the game into an extra period. Tynes missed three field goals wide left in pre-game warm-up as well, so the result was not completely shocking. The game time temperature for the NFC Championship was -1 degree with a wind chill of -23 degrees. The first player out of the Packers tunnel before the national anthem was the winning quarterback of the original Ice Bowl, Bart Starr. He received a rousing applause from the home crowd of 72,740 fans while wearing an oversized replica of the #15 he wore during the well-remembered game on December 31, 1967. The game started with the Packers converting two first down plays in a row with Brett Favre rolling out on naked bootlegs. The drive would stall along with many others in the first quarter of play. At the end of one complete the Giants had a 3-0 lead. The second quarter cooled a single degree and ignited the Packers offense. A single drop back by Brett Favre after a change of possession had Green Bay on the board with a 90-yard pitch and catch to Donald Driver. The 23 second drive had Packer faithful believing again. A Mason Crosby field goal later in the second quarter lifted the home team to a 10-6 lead at the half. The "G-MEN" came storming out of the locker room at intermission and marched down the field with numerous throws from Eli Manning to Plaxico Burress. Al Harris may have had the worst game of the season in trying to cover the Giants number one receiving threat. The drive ended with a one yard touchdown run by bruising back Brandon Jacobs. Green Bay middle linebacker Nick Barnett said the Giants starting back was the biggest runner he has tackled all season. (Audio Here) With a 13-10 lead, New York managed to hold the lead until nearly the end of the quarter when Tramon Williams returned a kick 49 yards and put the home squad in prime position. Favre threw his second TD of the game on a fade route to Donald Lee in the corner of the end zone. The 17-13 lead would not hold, however. With no running game to speak of the Packers were forced to pass 75% to 80% of the game. The fourth quarter began with the Packers driving through the air when R.W. McQuarters picked off a prayer thrown up by Favre. Trying to make a play, the corner back stayed on his feet and turned up field. Running back Ryan Grant caught McQuarters from behind and forced a fumble. Packer’s offensive linemen Mark Tauscher recovered the ball 20 yards down the field from the line of scrimmage. The hustle exhibited by the right tackle may have been the spark the green and gold needed. Starting at the opponent’s 19 yard line, the Packers ran three plays and were forced into another field goal attempt by Crosby. The 37 yarder was good and left the score 20-20. Bedlam broke out after Giant's kicker Lawrence Tynes missed two field goal attempts at the end of the game from 36 and 43 yards. The Packers dream season appeared to be alive after the captains met at midfield for the coin toss. Eli Manning called tails for the second time and lost for the second time to give Green Bay the ball first in the extra period. Overtime was over before it started. On the second play in OT Favre threw his second interception of the game at the Green Bay 28 yard line. Four plays later Tynes redeemed himself with a game winning 47 yard kick that sailed right through the uprights. Mason Crosby said Tynes showed resilience after his fourth quarter performance to win it with 12:34 left in the OT. (Audio Here) The NFC Champion New York Giants held Ryan Grant to 29 yards rushing. Favre finished with 236 passing yards and a 70.7 passer rating. The Giants won the turnover battle with the steady play of Eli Manning. The youngest Manning brother managed to throw for 254 yards but did not throw a TD. Wide receiver Plaxico Burress was the leading receiver with 11 catches for 154 yards. Super Bowl XVII will be played in Glendale, Arizona on February 3. The Patriots will look to finish their perfect season against the wild card New York Giants. In the post game press conference, Favre did not announce his plans for 2008 and beyond. He said the decision will be made much quicker than in past seasons. The Packers came up a game short of their ultimate goal in winning the Super Bowl. With the team’s talent and youth, it would be a surprise if Green Bay did not contend for a title next season. |

In varsity girl's hoops, Algoma continued their perfect streak with a 54-38 win over NEW Lutheran last night. Another future UWGB athlete, Sam Zastrow, scored 17 points to lead all scorers. Kiah Simon added 13 and Kayla Parkos chipped in 11. In Brussels, the Eagles were too much to handle for the Sturgeon Bay Clippers. Southern Door defeated the Clippers 46-26. Play in the paint by Brigette Baudhuin was the difference in the contest. She scored 17 points. Kelly Curtin and Sarah McCaulley scored 9 points a piece to lead Sturgeon Bay. Sevastopol beat their rivals the Gibraltar Vikings 51-30. Allison Junion led Sevastopol with 18 points. Molly Dickson scored nine in the loss. |

NFC Championship
Could Be A Defensive Showcase By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com January 19, 2008 The Green Bay Packers and New York Giants meet for the second time this season with a trip to Super Bowl XLII on the line. The Packers come into the 75th NFC title game on the heels of one of the most memorable playoff games in Lambeau Field history. Before 72,168 fans, the largest crowd ever to see a game at Lambeau Field, the Packers defeated the Seahawks 42-20 to earn their 14th berth in the NFC Championship Game in franchise history. The Giants, whom the Packers defeated in Week 2, 35-13, earned a spot in the NFC title game by defeating No. 1 seed Dallas, 21-17. The Packers have won four consecutive postseason games against the Giants. Another victory will tie the NFL record of five, set by the Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Bal/Ind. Colts). Two of the most venerable franchises in professional football history, the teams have combined for 18 championships. Green Bay (12 titles) ranks No. 1 among all NFL franchises, while the Giants (6) rank third. Freezing temperatures are the real story for tomorrow's game. Rookie kicker Mason Crosby had to fight through the snow last week and now he will have to contend with below zero wind chills. He has been following the weather forecast closely. (Audio Here) Another rookie said he is expecting the worst-case scenario in terms of weather. Receiver James Jones said the game in Chicago this season prepared him for the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field this weekend. (Audio Here) The Packers and Giants will kick off at 5:42 p.m. tomorrow on 104.1 FM WRLU and 105.1 FM WSBW. We will also bring you the AFC Championship between the Patriots and Chargers beginning at 1:00 p.m. |
