It Sounds Like Favre Is Coming Back For More
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 10, 2007

Wisconsin's favorite son, Brett Favre, appears set on returning to the Packers for another season regardless of the outcome of this year's playoff run. According to comments he made to his hometown newspaper Favre "would like to continue longer."
In a story posted on the Web site of the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun-Herald, the record-setting quarterback says he isn't approaching Saturday's playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks like it will be his final game in Green Bay.
"Each week, I bring more stress on myself wondering if this is too good to be true," Favre told the Sun-Herald. "I want to continue the streak and winning. When I talk about the streak, it's not the [consecutive] starts; it's the hot streak we are on. Then, I ask what can I do better?
"I am trying to enjoy it because this could be my last game in Green Bay," he said. "For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game. I would like to continue longer."
Favre and Packers coach Mike McCarthy have said the future Hall of Famer would wait until after the season to address the issue.
In his 17th season, Favre led the Packers to a 13-3 record with 28 touchdowns, 4,155 passing yards and a quarterback rating of 95.7, his best in 11 seasons. For his career, Favre has 442 TD passes, 61,655 passing yards and 5,377 pass completions.
"I have a lot to think about. It's been a fun year and winning has made it a good year," Favre told the newspaper. "For the first time in a couple of years, at this point, my focus is solely on Seattle and winning a playoff game at home."

Packers GM Thompson Signs New Contract
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 07, 2007

The Green Bay Packers have signed Ted Thompson, the team’s Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, to a new, five-year contract which runs through the 2012 season, team Chairman Bob Harlan announced Monday.

Thompson, currently in his third year as the leader of the team’s football operations, has built the Packers into one of the NFL’s strongest young teams, with this year’s squad tying a team record for victories with a 13-3 mark en route to the NFC North Division Championship and a first-round bye in the playoffs.

“We are very pleased with the way Ted Thompson has led the football operations of this organization,” Harlan said. “He is doing exactly what we anticipated when we hired him. He crafted his trade under Ron Wolf, built a strong football team in Seattle and has built a team here in Green Bay that is back in the playoffs. He has a great system of building the team through the draft and has the Packers positioned very well for the future.”

“This is a great organization and I am deeply humbled and appreciative,” said Thompson. “This is truly a team effort. Green Bay is a special place and I am honored to work with such a great group of people.”

Since taking over general manager duties in 2005, Thompson has strengthened the team’s foundation. Of the 53 active roster players for Saturday’s Divisional Playoff game against Seattle, 40 have been acquired by Thompson.

The 54-year-old Thompson is a native of Atlanta, Texas. He was a three-year starter at Southern Methodist University and enjoyed a 10-year playing career with the Houston Oilers (1975-84). Thompson previously served an eight-year tenure with the Packers personnel department (1992-99) and five seasons in Seattle (2000-04) as the team’s vice president of football operations before re-joining the Packers in 2005.

SPORTS POINT AND COUNTERPOINT

How Far Will The Packers Go?
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 06, 2007

The Green Bay Packers are not only in the playoffs but are favorites to play in the NFC Championship game. That comes as a surprise to many. At the beginning of the season, nobody thought this team could win 13 games and stroll into the playoffs with a first round bye. In an earlier "Sports Point and Counterpoint" Paul Schmitt and I bantered about the Packers playoffs hopes. I firmly believed after a (6-1) start in October, Green Bay would continue their winning ways. The last sentence of my earlier editorial was, "I'm buying my tickets to the NFC Championship game without a doubt." I still believe that is going to happen.
The Packers offense will be able to handle any of the defenses they may face next Saturday. The Seattle Seahawks are the likely opponents and Mike McCarthy will have his team ready to play. The only thing that worries me when Seattle and Green Bay match up is the Holmgren factor. There is not a single person in the NFL that knows Brett Favre better than the former leader of the Pack Mike Holmgren.
Despite the potential for the second round game in Lambeau to be a trap game, I believe the Packers are Super Bowl bound. I cannot believe I just said it but Super Bowl XLII will feature a team led by Brett Favre. Glendale, Arizona will be filled with cheese heads in disbelief.
The Packers will be there for three simple reasons.
1) BRETT FAVRE - The fearless quarterback has managed the offense better than ever. He set a career record for completion percentage and has the weapons to make him feel confident every time he drops back to pass. Favre is throwing fewer interceptions and compelling his team to play to their ability and beyond.
2) MIKE MCCARTHY - I believe McCarthy should be awarded with Coach of the Year honors. He worked with less and got more out of his team than any other coach in the league. His emphasis on the fundamentals will propel this team to a Super Bowl.
3) DEFENSE - If defense wins championships, Green Bay has a chance. The Packers have great run-stopping ability led by Ryan Pickett up front. Defensive ends Aaron Kampman, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Cullen Jenkins play run and pass extremely well. Linebackers Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk and Brady Poppinga are the hungriest group of young players at the position. Finally, Al Harris, Charles Woodson and Nick Collins in the secondary can match up with the best wide receivers in the game.

It's as easy as 1-2-3. The Packers will be in Super Bowl XLII.

How Far Will The Packers Go?
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 07, 2008

Okay, I admit it. I was dead wrong on the Packers this year. They proved me and alot of other people wrong. I thought the Packers would be competitive and win maybe seven or eight games this year. But THIRTEEN? Wow,
what a year! I'm sure glad I was wrong in this case.
But the playoffs are a whole different animal. Let me
pull out my ole' "cracked" crystal ball this time. Well, I can't see much. It's all hazy and a fuzzy. That's right it's
Mid-January at snowy and cold Lambeau Field. It's the NFC divisional championship...Packers versus the Buccaneers.
Brett Favre throws for three touchdowns and Ryan Grant
rushes for 140 yards as the Pack tame the Bucs 31-20.
Now my crystal ball clears for the moment. Ah yes, it's sunny Texas Stadium in Dallas on January 20. The Cowboys are hosting the Packers in the NFC championship game. The Packers lead early 14-3, but Tony Romo hooks up with Terrell Owens twice in the fourth quarter and Dallas
nips the Pack 31-27 to go to Super Bowl XLII (where they get destroyed by the New England Patriots 48-17). My
crystal ball now goes blank. But don't fear Packer fans, I caught a glimpse of Super Bowl XLIII. The Vince Lombardi Trophy comes home to Green Bay as Brett Favre hoists the trophy up high and tearfully announces his retirement at the post-game celebration!

Spartans Escape With One Point Win - Gibraltar Wins Big
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 05, 2008

Luxemburg-Casco and West DePere have become full-fledged rivals in the new Bay Conference. The rivalry grew with sectional baseball meetings in the past four seasons along with the Phantoms crushing the Spartans dreams of a state football championship in the playoffs several times in the past five years. The Spartans added another chapter to the book last night with a 38-37 win in boy’s basketball. Senior Jake Sinkula made one of two free throws with 40 seconds left to lift L-C to the win.
The Phantoms got two quality looks at the basket with time running down but could not capitalize. Jason Jandrin led Luxemburg-Casco with 12 points, Jake Sinkula scored nine and Dean Mehlberg added seven in the win.

In Fish Creek, Gibraltar overcame poor perimeter defense to outscore Oneida Nation 75-51. The non-conference boy’s basketball game looked more like a track meet. Devin Thomas led the Vikings with 16 and Sam Forkert and Sam Ausloos scored 15 a piece. The win draws Gibraltar closer to .500 at (4-5).

Wolves And Eagles Atop The Heap
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
January 05, 2008

The Algoma Wolves continued to prove why they are ranked number eight in the state with a 46-28 victory over Sturgeon Bay last night. Kiah Simon scored 19 points and point guard Sam Zastrow poured in 13 for the Packerland’s co-number one team. Algoma moved to (9-0) overall and is tied with Southern Door at (6-0) in the conference. Freshman Lizzie Dier stepped up big in the first half on her way to a ten-point performance. Sarah McCaulley scored 10 points to lead the Clippers.

Southern Door isn't buying into the talk of Algoma being number one in the Packerland. They topped Kewaunee 37-31 and remained undefeated on the season as well. Alyssa Sekadlo scored 20 and no other Eagles player managed to top seven points. Southern Door sits with an (11-0) overall record and (6-0) in Packerland play. Kari Wotachek scored 12 points to lead Kewaunee. They stand in third place in the conference at (5-3) overall and (4-2) in the conference.

The Gibraltar girls fell 47-42 to NEW Lutheran. The Blazers road the coat tails of Mary Baierl who scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Kayla Anschutz scored 17 points and Allison Pfeifer added 13 points to lead Gibraltar.

Sevastopol topped Oconto 54-42. Allison Junion with 15 points and Mariah Giesseman with 13 led the Pioneers. The win keeps them in a tie for third in the conference at (6-3) overall and (4-2) in the conference.
