The loss of Parcus Medical in Sturgeon Bay and the decommissioning of the Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant are unfortunate blows to our local economy. The silver lining this bad news presents is that everyone has another very important reason to support the Buy Local Initiatives in both counties.
If more dollars were spent in Door and Kewaunee Counties more local jobs would be created. When 73% of every dollar spent by Door County residents on clothing is spent outside the market that means a lot of positions in retail sales will never be filled in Door County. If just half the retail sales leakage of 70% in the furniture business could be kept local, many area families would have jobs in the furniture business. Printing jobs could double if more people did business with Door and Kewaunee County printers.
Buying what is available locally from out-of-town, out-of-market businesses is a local job killer. All of us know someone who is unemployed. We would be doing those under-or-unemployed friends and neighbors a favor by increasing what we buy locally. From printing and medical care to cars and trucks, clothing, furniture, electronics, sporting goods and more, buying local means jobs in all these business categories.
That’s my opinion. I’d like to hear yours.
