The announcement by State Representative Garey Bies yesterday that he will not seek an eighth term in the Wisconsin Assembly is an opportunity to thank elected officials for serving and to encourage the public to respect their privacy.
You do not have to agree with a public official l00% of the time to appreciate their service and sacrifice.
Garey Bies served in the state legislature for 14 years and many more before that as a law enforcement officer in Door County.
We did not always find ourselves in agreement on issues yet I respect Garey Bies. He put his name on the ballot, won election, took positions he believed in and fought for his principles. From town government to state politics I thank those who sit through hours of meetings, travel hundreds of times to Madison and volunteer countess hours making democracy work.
Not only do elected officials deserve gratitude and respect, their families do as well. Far too often the spouse or children of elected officials listen through their Friday night fish fry being interrupted by a constituent. Phone calls disrupt family time and meetings take people away from school concerts and ball games.
Thank you to State Representative Garey Bies for fourteen years of service and thank you to all who serve on town boards, city councils, county boards and school boards. You make democracy work and for that I say thanks.
That’s my opinion. I’d like to hear yours. I’m Roger Utnehmer.
