Irene M. Blahnik, 89, Algoma, died Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Ministry Door County Medical Center after a short illness. She was born August 9, 1923 in Algoma to Wenzel and Louise (Paul) Fiala.
Irene graduated from the Algoma High School and worked for a short time before marrying Stanley Blahnik on November 15, 1944 in Algoma. The couple farmed in the Town of Ahnapee until about 1979 when Stanley sold the farm to his nephew Dick Meyer. The couple built a new home in the Town of Ahnapee where she lived up until the time of her death. Stanley preceded her in death on December 24, 1989.
Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, baking, cooking and listening to polka music. She also helped out with the Town of Ahnapee elections for many years.
She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Jim) DuVal, Green Bay; two grandsons Russ DuVal and Randy (Melissa) DuVal; five great grandchildren Dalton, Miranda, Claire, Olivia and Amber; two sisters Evarista Nell and Marie Mleziva; two sisters-in-law Pat Fiala and Norma Blahnik; many nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Edward Fiala, brothers-in-law Walter Mleziva, Orland Nell, Ted G. Blahnik and Gilbert (Eleanor) Blahnik; one sister-in-law Regina (Mike) Meyer.
Family and friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church from 9 am Wednesday, December 19, 2012 until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am with Rev. William Swichtenberg officiating and burial in the church cemetery.
