Gerald M. Holtz, 88, Algoma, died peacefully September 10, 2012 at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit. He was born April 24, 1924 in Algoma to Louis and Augusta (Kersten) Holtz. Gerald graduated from the Algoma High School and entered the U.S. Navy.
Gerald married Leona Hafeman and she preceded him in death on September 16, 1999. Then he married June Dupont Poehls October 22, 2005 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rankin.
Gerald enjoyed his music, playing the trombone and playing in the Community Band for 27 years. His biggest achievement was playing on the steps of the White House in Washington, D.C. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Rankin and the VFW and American Legion Clubs in Algoma.
Gerald is survived by his wife June, his three children Alan (Theresa), Luxemburg; Connie (Peter) Klein, Ann Arbor, Mich; and Brian (Lori) Holtz, Sturgeon Bay; six grandchildren Melanie DeVries, Zachary DeVries, Cody Holtz, and Peter, Matthew and Michelle Klein, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Leona, two brothers Darwin and Arthur and one sister Lillian.
Family and friends may gather at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma from 4 - 8 pm on Friday, September 14, 2012 and after 10 am, Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rankin until the time of services at 11:00 am with Rev. Thomas Zehnder officiating. Burial in the church cemetery with full military rites.
