Helen Brauer

Helen A. Brauer, 95, of Sturgeon Bay, formerly of Valmy, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Ministry Door County Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1917 in Argo, IL to John and Edna Kozlowski. At an early age Helen’s family moved to Bloomer, WI where she attended Heinmann School. In 1936 the family moved to Door County just west of Highway 57 on Clark Lake Road. Helen married George Joseph Brauer on June 1, 1937 at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Institute, Wisconsin and continued to farm the Brauer Homestead. In July of 1951 they went into the tavern business in Valmy. After her husband’s death in 1961 she continued to operate the V-Bar until 1963 when she finally sold it and moved to Sturgeon Bay. Helen then worked in various restaurants, including Roy’s Drive-In. She also worked at Leeds in Sturgeon Bay.

After retiring Helen would winter in Panama City Beach, FL and visit her older brother in Tampa before returning to Sturgeon Bay, then staying with her daughter, Karen for the summer. In 1984 she and her youngest son, Bobby, purchased a home on the beach and would spend the next several winters having a wonderful time together. Then in 1998 she moved back to Door County and stayed with her son Bobby until January 2010 when she moved to the Golden Living Dorchester.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing, growing flowers, playing cards and bingo, making Afghans and plastic rugs for camping and listening to the Modern Day Drifters Country Band. Helen was also a lifelong member of the Cherryland Model “A’s” here in Sturgeon Bay.

Helen is survived by her four children, Eugene (Janet) Brauer of Vernon, FL, Charles Brauer of Luxemburg, WI, Karen (Steve) Jenkins of Sturgeon Bay, WI and Robert Brauer of Sturgeon Bay, WI; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and expecting another great-grandson any day; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Kozlowski and Rosemary “Snooky” Kozlowski.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, John Kozlowski and Frank “Shorty” Kozlowski; and grandson, Randy Brauer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday (August 27, 2012) at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Robert Konkol as celebrant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m.

Memorials may be given in her memory.

The family would like to thank the Unity Hospice caregivers.
