Joan E. Schartner, 78, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away at Ministry-Door County Medical Center with her family at her side on Saturday, July 14, 2012. She was born in Sturgeon Bay on September 4, 1933, to August and Minnie (Paape) Wanke. On June 19, 1954, she married Leonard Schartner in Institute; he preceded her in death on November 20, 2005. She and her husband owned and operated Schartner Implement and the “S” Stop for many years. Joan was an active member of Corpus Christi Church and the St. Ann’s Society. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
Survivors include seven children, Tara (James, Jr.) Halstead, Sturgeon Bay; Joseph (Mary) Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Kevin (Ann) Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Kim (Terry) Vogel, Sturgeon Bay; Thomas (Jill) Schartner, Drummond; Melissa (Kevin) Marchant, Sturgeon Bay and Amy (Jamie) Alberts, Sturgeon Bay; 23 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; in-laws; Doris Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Ruth Schartner, Waukesha; Shirley Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Carol Grandbouche, West Virginia; Bob Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Mary (Bill) Junion, Sturgeon Bay; Helen Henschel, Sturgeon Bay; Arnie Schartner, Sturgeon Bay; Ann (Al) Tanck, Sturgeon Bay. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers and sisters, Alfred (Dolly) Wanke; Vada (Wendell) Bagnall; Owen (Violet) Wanke; Bill (Doris) Wanke; Hugo Wanke; Lois (Arnie) Weber; in-laws, Louis Schartner, Donald Schartner, Bill Schartner, John Grandbouche, Diane Schartner, and Roger Henschel.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Corpus Christi Church, Rev. Anthony Birdsall and Rev. Carl Schmitt concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and then after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the church until time of services.
