Dawn D. Wittig, 60, of Sturgeon Bay (Hoe Island) Potawatomi State Park, entered into eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ, Monday evening, July 28, 2014, with her loving husband, Fred, at her side. She came to know Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 26.
She was born Dawn Deanna Matthews, on December 3, 1953, in Elgin, IL, the daughter of the late Harold Vernon and Ruth Corrine (Benninger) Matthews. Following her graduation from Oconto Falls High School in 1972, she received her degree in elementary education from St. Paul Bible College in 1990. Dawn taught at a private school in Green Bay and was a substitute teacher throughout Door County. She started Door County’s first all-organic restaurant, “The New Leaf,” and founded and operated the Potawatomi State Park Rentals and camp store.
On May 5, 1995, she married Fred H. Wittig in Green Bay. They owned and operated “The Healthy Way” on the west side of Sturgeon Bay.
Dawn was a member of Door County Christian Women’s Organization. She enjoyed being outdoors, sewing, playing and performing classical guitar, along with continuing her Bible study and education. Dawn was always very active and even participated in a triathlon last year.
Survivors include her husband, Fred; daughter, Ruth (David Schrubbe) Rivers of Oshkosh; three grandchildren, Joshua, Eleanor, Nathaniel; three brothers, Robert Matthews of Kewaunee, Danny (Betsy) Matthews of Newburgh of, Indiana, John (Margie) Matthews of Brookfield; six step-children, Todd (Dawn) Wittig of Sheboygan, Mindy Wittig of Greenfield, Brett (Carissa) Wittig of West Bend, Chris (Tiffany) Wittig of Wayne, WI, Matt (Jessica) Wittig of Germantown, Dan (Lauren) Wittig of Hubertus; 13 step-grandchildren, Zac and Luke; Ben; Abe, Reagan, Isaiah, Ellora; Morgan, Jack, Mitch, Alex; Grace, Harris
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Delores Scoles.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 9, 2014 (Saturday) at Huehns Funeral Home.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. August 8, 2014 (Friday) at Huehns Funeral Home. Family will greet guests at the funeral home on August 9, 2014 (Saturday morning) from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m.
