Thomas “Tom” Tierney, 80, of Bay View Drive in the Town of Nasewaupee, Sturgeon Bay, entered Eternal life on July 19, 2014. He died peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving wife and his four children. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Carol (Zacher); and children, Kathleen “Ky” (Randy) Heinlen of Bay Village, OH; Patrick (Therese) Tierney of Howell, MI; Elizabeth “Liz” (Dan) Kolb of Brookfield, WI; and William “Will” (Karyn) Tierney of Greenfield, IN. Further survived by his grandchildren, Brigid (Levi) Perkins; Alison, Jeffrey, Matthew, and Peter Kolb; Dixon, Lydia, and Aiden Tierney; great-grandchild, June Perkins; brother, James (Katherine) Tierney of Kansas City, MO; and many dear nieces and nephews.
Tom was born May 10, 1934 in Kansas City, MO, and preceded in death by his parents William Francis and Anne Bridget (Schweiger) Tierney; brother, George Tierney; and twin brother, William Tierney.
Following his graduation from Rockhurst High School, Tom completed his degree in mechanical engineering from Finley College in Kansas City. He joined Delco-Remy, a division of General Motors (GM), in 1957. During his career with GM, he managed the Milwaukee and Detroit engineering offices and later became the Chief Engineer over current and advance product development. By 1982, Tom was promoted to the executive staff level of the division and spent the majority of his remaining time with GM managing the Technology, Marketing, Planning and Public Relations groups. He retired in 1994 after 38 years with GM.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Tom was very active in Rotary, both in Anderson, IN, and Sturgeon Bay, and rarely missed a meeting. He also served as Commodore of the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. He loved to ski and was a member of the National Ski Patrol for over 10 years receiving national honors and the Brown Cross. He was active with the Boy Scouts serving on the Board of Directors in Indiana.
Tom also loved to sail and while living in Milwaukee, quickly discovered the beauty of Door County. He moved to Sturgeon Bay after retiring and married Barbara Carol Zacher on May 10, 1999.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay with Fr. Carl Schmitt and Tom’s cousin, Fr. Michael Tierney concelebrating.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay. A parish wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, at Huehns Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given in Tom’s memory to St. John Bosco Catholic School or the Rotary Foundation Scholarship Fund.
