Martha F. Powell

Martha F. Powell, 92, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away early Tuesday morning, April 22, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Dorchester.

She was born Martha Frances Moss on January 22, 1922, in Newport News, VA, the daughter of the late Arthur Curtis Moss Sr. and Laura Elizabeth (Williams) Moss. Following her graduation from high school, she studied nursing at Buxton Hospital in Hampton, VA, and worked as an LPN before being married. In 1944, she married Allen Alexander Powell, Sr. in Miami, FL. He preceded her in death in 1976.

Martha moved to Sturgeon Bay from Newport News in 1986 to be closer to her son, Allen, and her grandchildren. She enjoyed people and worked at Spurgeon’s and Sheila’s Corner House. Martha was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay and was active teaching CCD along with singing in the choir. She enjoyed sewing and reading.

Survivors include her two sons, Allen (Cynthia) Powell of Sturgeon Bay, Thomas (Beth) Powell of Ruckersville, VA; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Laura Moss; husband, Allen A. Powell Sr.; and one brother, Arthur Curtis Moss Jr.

At her request, there will be no public service. Interment will be made at Bayside Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed in her memory to the Cancer Center at Ministry-Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay.
