Mary T. Schwantes, 84, of Sturgeon Bay, passed on March 3, 2014, at Pine Crest Village. She was born on August 10, 1929, in Milwaukee to Kenneth and Constance (Bergen) Cornwall. On April 14, 1951, she married Curtis O. Schwantes in Milwaukee; he preceded her death on Sept. 20, 1988.
Mary and her loving husband Curt moved the family to Sturgeon Bay in 1967, when Curt was hired to start the First National Bank in Sturgeon Bay. In 1975, Mary’s son, Michael, purchased the Nautical Inn in Sturgeon Bay. Mary served as the kitchen manager for 5 years, at which time all 5 of her daughters waitressed and worked closely with their mother and brother. After the family sold the restaurant, Mary became a registered Real Estate Broker and helped start Creative Leisure Real Estate Company, the forerunner of CBS-Global, LLC. She worked as a principle broker and sold many businesses and commercial real estate in Door County.
In subsequent years, Mary enjoyed her many trips to Naples, Florida and enjoyed worldly travels that included Ireland, England, and Australia. She was one of the most loving, giving, and caring persons. She loved the warmth of the sun, watching the birds, and making crafty things for others. She loved to read and loved being a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The love of her life was her dog, Caesar.
Survivors include, one son, Michael Schwantes, Sturgeon Bay; five daughters, Patti (Jeff) Peterson, Sturgeon Bay; Mary (Michael) Lehn, Oconomowoc; Connie (David) Sura Onalaska; Sue (Joe) Vreeke, Manitowoc; Bobbi (Dale) Fuller Jr., Sturgeon Bay; 8 grandchildren, Blake and Danielle Peterson, Genna Lahn, Michelle Boisen, Callie Vreeke, Jason, Cory and Cam Fuller; 2 great-grandchildren, Nolan Peterson and Braylon Boisen; 2 brothers, James and Neil Cornwall.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, Nora, Patty, and Peggy, brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jenny Schultz.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Stegmann officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Arthritis Foundation. Forbes Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
