Vernis Ida Matilda (Gaedtke) Karnopp-Kudick age 89, Ellisville, formerly of Kewaunee, passed to eternal life on Tuesday evening, December 17, 2013. Vernis was born on February 16, 1924 in the town of Montpelier to the late Walter and Adela (Lenke) Gaedtke. On March 4, 1944 she married Elton Karnopp at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montpelier. Together they farmed in the town of Montpelier and raised five sons who she was very proud of and loved equally. Elton preceded her in death on December 26, 1980. On October 13, 1984 Vernis married Elmer Kudick; he preceded her in death on October 9, 1986.
Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her sons and their families, especially making her delicious scalloped potatoes and potato pancakes for them. Known as Grandma Vern (the ‘fun’ Grandma) to many, she enjoyed her grandchildren and always found time to share a drink along with a story from days gone by with them. She also enjoyed polka music and playing cards with her many friends.
She will be dearly missed by all, and is survived by four sons, Nolan (June) Karnopp, Arlin (Mary Lou) Karnopp, Dean (Shelley) Karnopp, all of Ellisville; Neil (Brenda) Karnopp, Kewaunee; 16 grandchildren, Missey (Sam) Bartels, Candy (Steve) Hanmann, Joel (Audra) Karnopp, Kraigg Karnopp, Corey Karnopp, Angie (Mike) Peterson, Troy (Theresa) Karnopp, Kate (Bruce) Kinjerski, Ricky (Jessica) Karnopp, Rob (Nicole) Karnopp, Jason (Kali) Karnopp, Amanda (Nate) Eytcheson, Dustin Karnopp, Brandi (fiancé Brandon Clark) Karnopp, Chalsee Karnopp, and Jacob Karnopp; 21 great-grandchildren, Ande (fiancé Alicia Lathrop), Tim, Erin, and Katie Bartels, Madison and Sophie Hanmann, Brayden, Kerissa, and Leilah Karnopp, Emma Peterson, Taylor and Kyle Karnopp, Lydia, Bella and Abby Kinjerski, Gavin and Logan Karnopp, Ryker and Ainsley Karnopp, London and Briggs Karnopp; one great-great-grandchild Emily Bartels; one brother and two-sisters-in-law Norbert (Marie) Gaedtke, Kewaunee; and Delores Clark, Algoma. She is further survived by her nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Vernis was preceded in death by her son Merle; daughter-in-law Sharon; great-granddaughter Mila; sisters and brothers-in-law Gladys (Orland) Fulp and Bernice (Harold) Beilke; one brother Gerhardt Gaedtke; her father in law and mother-in-law Edwin and Amanda Karnopp, one sister in law and one brother-in-law Edgar and Ethel Dahlke.
Visitation for Vernis will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 9am to 12pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montpelier (N4118 County Road AB, Luxemburg). Funeral 12:00 Noon, Friday at the church with Rev. James Athey officiating. Burial in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Montpelier.
