Keta G. Steebs

Longtime Door County Advocate columnist, Keta G. Steebs, 88, died peacefully, early Friday morning (April 26, 2013) at her home in Sturgeon Bay. She had just finished writing what would turn out to be her last column.

Keta was born Marcheta Georgia Pearson April 24, 1925 in Iron River, MI, the daughter of the late Arthur and Dorothy (Everingham) Pearson. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School celebrating her 70th class reunion this past year. September 2, 1950 she was married to Herman Steebs in Aurora, WI. They moved to Sister Bay in 1956 where they owned and operated, “Happy Herman’s Market,” as Herman was a butcher by trade. Herman preceded her in death December 21, 1982.

Keta was hired by the Green Bay Press Gazette only for a short time before Chan Harris hired her away in 1969 to write for the Door County Advocate, a relationship that lasted nearly half a century. Throughout her career Keta received numerous state and national journalism awards and was inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame, class of 2012. She also was a recipient of the Best Humorous Column Award by the National Newspaper Association.

Keta was a member of Door County Red Hatters and the Door County Democratic Party. She was an independent, intelligent, and charismatic lady, an honorary Packer Golden Girl, and the recipient of many Door County community awards. She was influenced growing up during the Great Depression and her thoughtfulness for others before herself was evident in her support of Native American causes and the Salvation Army. Keta didn’t always take the popular opinion, but she could stand her ground. All of her life she believed in fighting for the underdog. Keta loved to read, especially mysteries. She loved to host parties. When you came into a room and Keta was there, it didn’t take long before you knew it. Throughout the years she was active in community politics on both the state and national levels. Keta loved humor more than anything.

Survivors include her two sons, Scott (Kathy) Steebs of Sturgeon Bay, Patrick Steebs (and his friend, Kirsten Scheller) of Ellison Bay; four grandchildren, Brandon, Wil, Adele, Luke; two brothers, Allen “Pee Wee” (Shirley) Pearson of Iron Mountain Michigan, Kent (Jean Ann) Pearson of Aurora, WI; and her sister-in-law, Delores Pearson of Clearwater, FL. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to Herman, also preceeding Keta in death were her parents; husband; two sisters, Yvonne Latona, Delores Landstrom; and one brother, Arthur “Wayne” Pearson.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (May 4, 2013) at St. Peters Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joel Sauer officiating. Burial will be at Little Sister Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday (May 3, 2013) at Huehns Funeral Home, and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. There will be devotions at 7:45 p.m. on Friday evening at Huehns Funeral Home.
