Arthur “Art” Gale Penpek, age 74, of Egg Harbor, WI, and of The Villages, FL, died Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, WI, after a courageous battle with mantle cell lymphoma.
He was born on March 27, 1939, to Frank and Naomi (Garren) Penpek in Erie, PA. He graduated in 1957 from Strong Vincent High School in Erie. In high school he was on the cross country and basketball teams and was also class president. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, spending the last year of his service at Truax Field in Madison, WI. It was there that he met the love of his life, Elaine Statz. They were married on May 5, 1962.
Art attended The Wisconsin School of Electronics in Madison and worked for Control Data Corp. in Minneapolis, MN, after graduation. He was later hired by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and spent 33 years employed in the Physics Department and later at the Physical Sciences Lab. Art made friends wherever he went and could talk to anyone about anything. He will be fondly remembered by so many people.
After retiring from UW-Madison, Art and Elaine enjoyed living part-time in Egg Harbor, WI. Art was a member of the Alpine Golf Course and played in their men’s league. He was also a member of the Egg Harbor Lions Club. In Madison, he was a member of Bucky Ambassadors and worked tirelessly in support of the UW Athletic Department. He and Elaine coordinated 400 volunteers for the UW Athletic Department’s Crazylegs Run for 14 years.
More recently, Art and Elaine split their time between Egg Harbor and The Villages, FL – the best of both worlds! Art had many friends in The Villages and loved to spend time with them: golfing, dining and socializing. Art and Elaine organized a group called Door County Villagers – people from Door County, WI who also reside in The Villages, FL. That group now numbers over 100 members.
Art is survived by Elaine, his loving wife of 50 years; two children: Maria Penpek Busby of Madison and David Arthur Penpek (Pat Curtis) of Egg Harbor; two grandchildren: Christopher Busby and Nathaniel (Nate) Busby, both of Madison. He is also survived by two brothers: Louie (Annette) Penpek and Larry Penpek and four brothers-in-law: Bill (Evey) Statz, Charlie (Deb) Statz, Frank (Patti) Statz, and Joe Statz; former son-in-law and favorite golf partner, Brian Busby; many nieces; nephews; cousins; and his favorite aunt, Yvonne Pedersen. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Richard Penpek; and sister-in-law Marie Penpek.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Rob Hegeman and all the staff at the UW-Madison Carbone Cancer Center, the staff at Ministry Door County Medical Center, and Unity Hospice Care for their compassion and excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carbone Cancer Center, 1 S. Park Street, Madison, WI 53715. A Celebration of Art’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013, from 1 to 4 pm at the Bertschinger Center, 7860 Highway 42, Egg Harbor, WI.
Art loved family above all else and was never happier than when presiding over the barbecue grill at a family gathering. Goodbye for now, dear one, until we meet again.
