On recent guide trip in Northern Door County a client of mine asked me about the islands that dot the peninsula. In this two part series we will examine some of the more popular islands and some not so well known islands that encompass Door County.
There are many different islands surrounding the peninsula, especially in the northern half. Starting off the shores of Fish Creek there is a large island that is sometimes mistaken for Michigan -- Chambers Island. This is Door County's second largest island. Moving north we have a four island chain, Hat, Jack, Adventure and Pirate Island. These islands are often referred to as the Strawberry Island chain. Nestled at the mouth of Ephraim Harbor we have Horseshoe Island, named after its obvious shape.
Many of these islands were formed thousands of years ago as the glaciers receded north and carved Door County along the Niagara Escarpment. Next week we will continue our island exploration as we round Death's Door and come down the Lake Michigan shoreline.
