July 4th is arriving soon and Americans will be celebrating their independence. Declare your independence this year by commemorating the 4th with your freedom from smoking. If you are not a smoker, encourage the smokers in your life to become independent from nicotine addiction. We all know that smoking is bad for your health and can lead to many chronic diseases, even death!
Nicotine is highly addictive and breaking that addiction is difficult, but achievable. It is important to highlight the benefits of smoking cessation. The effects of quitting start to set in immediately. Less than 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your heart rate will already start to drop back towards normal levels. In just 12 hours after quitting smoking, the carbon monoxide in your body decreases to lower levels, and your blood oxygen levels increase to normal. And after 2-3 weeks, lung function improves significantly and withdrawal symptoms start to dissipate.
Resources are available to help smokers quit. But remember, different treatments work for different people. The most important thing is for smokers to try, try, and try again until they succeed. Talk to your doctor or health coach about resources to quit smoking or visit www.smokefree.gov.
Celebrate your independence!
