Three people had to be rescued when their boat took on water and nearly sank in the waters off Sister Bay.
DNR Warden Mike Neal says the three were in a bass boat about a quarter-mile offshore just south of Yacht Works around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when they noticed they had taken on a lot of water. Neal says it turns out a pipe on the boat's bait well was faulty and water that should have been pumping into the well was instead going into the bottom of the boat.
"By the time they realized what was going on the bilge pumps couldn't keep up and eventually (the boat) was no longer positively buoyant," says Neal.
Neal says a boat from Yacht Works was able to rescue the boaters and tow the boat to shore. He says all three people were wearing life jackets.
