More baby boomers are pre-planning their own funerals, leading to an increase in advance business for area funeral homes. Directors of local funeral homes say they've seen increases of up to 20 percent over the past few years in the number of pre-planned services. Some directors say nearly half of funerals are now pre-planned, compared to 20 percent or less a decade ago.

The concept of funeral pre-planning has existed for about 20 years. It was initially used by people on Medicaid able to secure a portion of their assets to finance their funeral.
