Cool, Rainy Planting Weather Sets Farmers Back

Average summer weather will mean a delayed crop maturity for farmers on the peninsula after cool, wet conditions delayed planting by 7-10 days.

Dairy farmer Rich Olson says if cooler temperatures carry on through the entire summer his crops will yield lower energy content for his herd of 100 cows.

Olson farms 1,100 acres halfway between Sturgeon Bay and Algoma on County Highway S and had to wait a little longer to cut his first crop of alfalfa as well.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac , June’s average temperature for the Green Bay region will be about 60 degrees  (3 degrees below average) and we’ll see about 2 more inches of rain compared to the 2.5 inch average.
