From curious spectators to devoted racers, the 5th Annual Washington Island Canoe and Kayak Event will offer activities for all next Friday through Sunday.
The main event is the marathon. Paddlers from near and far will circumnavigate the island early Saturday morning trying to beat last year’s winning time of 3:16:20, a course record set by New Zealand resident Simon Longdill. Event director Valerie Fons says she’ll be participating in the half marathon.
The event also includes symposiums for beginners to intermediate paddlers Saturday and a guided eco-tour of Jackson Harbor. Boats will be available for rental. Sunday paddlers will cross Death’s Door.
For the spectators, Fons says maps will be available so they can visit various lookout points and follow the marathon paddlers or listen to voyageurs dressed in 1760s garb tell the historical narrative of the Great Lakes.
