Summer weekends mean more traffic in Door County -- and especially in Sturgeon Bay with the Bayview Bridge closed and vehicles being diverted through the city.
Friday afternoon motorists may have noticed police manually operating the traffic lights at the intersection of Madison and Maple to keep things from backing up.
Sturgeon Bay Police Captain Dan Brinkman says officers will conduct the manual operation of the lights on an as needed basis depending on the traffic.
"It doesn't take much to open a box with a key and start manually clicking buttons and allowing traffic to flow," says Brinkman.
Brinkman says Memorial Day weekend was a big test to see how the city would respond to a high volume of traffic during the bridge detour and says he thinks they "came through with flying colors."
The Bayview Bridge -- which carries an average of 12,700 vehicles a day -- is expected to reopen at the end of the month.
