State Representative Garey Bies (R-Sister Bay) received a blessing from the Dalai Lama during his visit to the State Capitol on Tuesday. The Dalai Lama, the head of state and spiritual leader of Tibet, addressed a joint meeting of the Wisconsin Legislature.
"The Dalai Lama has fought the majority of his life for his peoples' freedom from China," said Bies. "His Holiness is an inspirational human being, and I am honored to have had the opportunity to meet him."
Bies offered the Dalai Lama a white kata, a silken scarf which is a traditional Tibetan sign of unity. The offering indicates the request is not marred by corrupt thoughts or ulterior motives.
The Dalai Lama was in Madison as part of the Change your Mind Change the World 2013 initiative, which examines how science, economics, environments, emotional intelligence and health care can combine to make the world a healthier, happier place.
