The waters of Door County are not only nationally recognized for their tranquil beauty but also for the creatures that live within it. Nearly 23 years ago Gary and Cheryl Nault along with some help from a couple of local anglers organized the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament. Nowadays the event has attracted the attention of many anglers across the United States and Canada.
The main target anglers are fishing for is the smallmouth bass. The smallmouth bass is a shallow water species, coming into the shallow rocky bays in spring to spawn. They occur naturally in Green Bay and the DNR does no stocking. Over the years anglers have seen both the size and the overall population of the species increase -- a true testament to the quality of the fishery in Door County.
Pound for pound the smallmouth bass is one of the most aggressive species that lives in Green Bay and I encourage you to target them on your next fishing adventure.
