Mail carriers in Door County will join those around the country in participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive this Saturday, May 11.
Sturgeon Bay's Darrell LeCloux, who coordinates the drive for Door County, says the event fills a needed gap because food pantries are in dire need at this time of year.
LeCloux says postal customers will be receiving an information card alerting them to the event and will be getting a bag they can use to donate non-perishable food items.
On Saturday, mail carriers will collect the donations as they make their regular rounds.
LeCloux says this is the 21st year of the event nationally and the 18th year Sturgeon Bay postal workers will be participating.
He says 15,000 pounds of food was collected by Sturgeon Bay mail carriers last year with a total of 23,000 pounds collected in Door County.
Nationally, 70 million pounds of food was collected in 2012 and more than 1.2 billion pounds of food has been brought in since the drive started 21 years ago.
