Check those cable bills carefully.
That's the message the Door County Sheriff's Department has for residents after checking into a recent fraud complaint.
Sheriff Terry Vogel says his department was asked to investigate after a resident received a bill, purportedly from Charter Communications, in the amount of $160. The bill said it should be paid immediately by phone or the service would be disconnected.
The bill contained the "Charter" logo and appeared legitimate. But after a thorough investigation and talking with a Charter representative the Sheriff's Department determined the bill was false.
Vogel says with today's computer systems and laser printers there are many ways for scammers to fool people, like using a logo off of a website to make their documents look legitimate. He reminds residents to always look over bills and other requests for money carefully before providing any credit card numbers or bank account information.
