Lee Vanden Heuvel does not agree with the state smoking ban, but he’s done taking the risk of allowing patrons to smoke inside at Why-Lee’s tavern in Rosiere.
The fines piled up and Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel turned up the heat, asking the Town of Brussels to consider suspending Vanden Heuvel’s liquor license. With winter finally fading away, Vanden Heuvel says he’s no longer allowing people to light up inside.
When the smoking ban put out smoking in enclosed public spaces in 2010, Vanden Heuvel made a business decision to risk flouting the law.
The tavern owner doesn’t deny any wrongdoing and agrees with the sheriff’s actions. Vogel says he has warned and cited the establishment several times.
Since Vanden Huevel is putting a stop to smoking in his establishment, he expects to have no troubles with the town board in renewing his liquor license in July.
