Every year the Door County sanitarian sends out septic system maintenance reports to property owners who then must have a plumber or pumper inspect their systems. County Sanitarian John Teichtler says this year about 99% of the reports he got back described functioning septic systems.
Of the 3,200 reports he sent out, Teichtler only had to cite about 34 property owners for not returning the maintenance report, which is lower than in past years. Property owners receive the maintenance report every three years after installing a septic system.
Teichtler says the most common reason septic systems fail is caused by misuse or abuse, such as exceeding the daily number of gallons of waste the system is designed for or if users pour things like chemicals or grease down the drain.
