Room tax collections in Door County have posted an increase for the third straight year.
According to figures released by the Door County Tourism Zone Commission, Door County's room tax revenue for 2012 was nearly $3.5 million -- an increase of 6.4% over 2011.
In addition, the Commission says the county's ½ percent sales tax revenue grew 3% -- about $90,000 -- in 2012, which equates to an increase of nearly $18 million in gross sales.
"We have seen consistent growth of total tax collections over the last three years since 2009, the first year all 19 communities were a part of the Door County Tourism Zone," says Josh Van Lieshout, Tourism Zone chairman.
Van Lieshout says 66% of the collected funds go to the Door County Visitor Bureau for tourism marketing and promotion, 30% gets directed back to the municipalities where collections occurred, and 4% of the take is retained by the Door County Tourism Zone for operating expenses of collections, enforcement and accounting.
