The Town of Union voted unanimously to deny a permit to the Southern Door Community Church on Wednesday night to turn part of its building into a transitional shelter for families.
Town Chairman Cletus Fontaine says about 50 people were at the board meeting Wednesday and the majority espoused their displeasure with the plans.
Southern Door Community Church Pastor Paul Peterson says it was discouraging, but he plans to speak with congregation members this weekend to brainstorm more ideas to use the space.
"That'll be the question – what's next?" Peterson says.
