A recent incident on Washington Island has prompted the Island's police chief to advise residents to lock their doors.
Chief Tyler McGrane says in late January a homeowner was awakened in the middle of the night to find someone in the upstairs hallway. The person left before the family could identify him.
McGrane says the intruder ended up being someone the homeowners knew, but the chief says the incident underscores the importance of locking doors. He says many Island residents own guns and things could have unfolded differently.
McGrane says the police department put out a notice in the Washington Island Observer to advise residents to lock their doors when they leave their houses and at night. He says it's a good idea for Islanders to lock their vehicles as well.
