Bay Shipbuilding Corporation in Sturgeon Bay is not only a good corporate citizen it also looks like it has a very bright future creating jobs in Door County.
Bay Shipbuilding is one of three local marine firms opening its doors to the public each year as a major fund-raiser for the Rotary Club of Sturgeon Bay. The Rotary Shipyard Tours draw visitors from throughout the United States each May. It is the only opportunity of the year for the public to get an inside view of Bay Ship, Palmer Johnson and Great Lakes Yacht Works.
Bay Ship Production Manager Stewart Fett recently predicted the company may be converting Great Lakes vessels to liquid natural gas fuel within a few years, meaning even more employment opportunity in Sturgeon Bay. Fett also suggested a recovering economy will mean more demand for platform supply vessels, two of which are under construction now at Bay Ship.
The success of Bay Ship and their cutting edge use of technology to improve the navigability, fuel economy and personnel demands of Great Lakes ships is an impressive story.
Several years ago some may have worried about an Italian company taking ownership of a local major industry. Today the conscientious work force, tech-savvy management and visionary leadership is keeping a major employer not only creating jobs but being a very good corporate citizen as well.
Sturgeon Bay is a better place with good corporate citizens like Fincantieri among us.
