A bit earlier than normal and not quite as severe. That's what one physician is saying about this year's flu season in Door County.
Dr. Jim Heise, an internist at North Shore Medical Clinic in Sturgeon Bay, says places like the Fox Valley and Milwaukee have seen more influenza cases than Door County. He says the Door Peninsula has had its share of flu cases but they seemed to occur earlier than usual.
"We're still seeing it," says Heise. "I know here at North Shore Medical Clinic we've had patients who've tested positive for the flu. But I think we've actually kind of dodged a bit of a bullet."
Dr. Heise says getting a flu vaccination is a critical line of defense in staving off the flu, but he says it's probably not the most important one...
Heise stressed that it's not too late to get a flu shot.
"We see flu all the way through early spring," says Heise. So it's not too late if you haven't done it, and especially if you've got other medical problems such as asthma, emphysema, heart disease or diabetes -- or if you're just a young child -- vaccination's always the best bet."
