The cities of Algoma and Marinette are among the latest Wisconsin communities to be recognized by Bird City Wisconsin.
Algoma and Marinette -- along with the city of Milwaukee, village of Menomonee Falls and the towns of Spring Green and Three Lakes -- have been named "Bird City" communities for their long-term commitment to bird conservation.
As part of the process to achieve the designation, Algoma City Administrator Tom Reynolds says Algoma established a Bird City Committee to protect and promote birds and bird watching in the city.
The six communities are among 60 that have been recognized so far by Bird City Wisconsin, which has modeled the program after "Tree City USA." Two Door County communities are on the list: Baileys Harbor and Ephraim/Peninsula State Park.
Bird City communities each receive a special Bird City Wisconsin flag, plaque and street signs to be erected at their boundaries to mark their conservation achievements.
